Nijis (Fatimid Egyptian) defeats GDod (Normans) 60-40.

A river and two clumps of woods squeeze the two forces together into a jumbled confrontation. At first the Fatimid archers take a heavy toll but the indomitable Norman dismounted knights surge back. Scores remain only a few points apart until the final turns, when Fatimid cavalry are able to isolate and defeat enough Normans for victory.

SnuggleBunnies wrote: Sat Jun 27, 2020 11:33 am Mirror matches across the board would have two benefits and one substantial drawback -

1) It would mean players didn't feel screwed by their army choice
2) It would encourage players to use more eccentric and fun army lists without fear of getting stomped across the board

With of course the drawback that it would take more time to play, so people would enter less sections. That sort of variety and encouragement of less 'gaming' of army choice would be worth entering fewer sections to me, unlike larger armies, but I suspect it's not a popular idea.
I agree 100% with that. Maybe just for one division.

Tough matchup for my opponent. My arrows were just too much for the Roman/Armenian infantry. There wasn't much he could have done.

Thanks for the game!

Our lines completely spread out on contact with both of our right flanks collapsing quickly. My left flank was able to get the points needed before his left could fully join the fight. It was very close up to the last couple turns.

Thanks for the game!

Division C

rs2excelsior (Carthaginian 550-411 BC with Greek, Western 460-381 BC allies) beat SpeedyCM (Median 626-550 BC) 66-58

This fight was every bit as much a bloodbath as the score indicates. The Median army deployed with Sparbara and archers on a hill on their left and Median spearmen to their right, with a long cavalry line behind the right flank. The Carthaginian army deployed with chariots on the right for a first strike against the Median archers, mixed heavy infantry in the center, and medium foot and cavalry on the left. We advanced at the oblique, attacking along the Median infantry line, while the Carthaginian left held back to head off the Median horse. The chariots met a hail of arrows and were repulsed - they managed to get into contact but a couple bounced off, leading to them being showered by even more arrows. The infantry facing off against the Sparbara and archers on the hill behind them didn't fare much better, with the Spanish scutarii getting worn down before impact and then being flanked and routed by Sparbara advancing down the hill. On the other flank, however, Carthaginian spearmen and Greek hoplites slammed into the Median spears, who were shattered in fairly short order. As each side's victorious left flank wheeled about to face the enemy, the Carthaginian horse and mediums held off the Median cavalry, despite being outnumbered. While the Carthaginian horse was routed eventually, they managed to largely keep the Median cavalry wing from striking the flanks and rear of the Carthaginian heavy infantry.

The latter stage of the battle was extremely close, with both armies over 50% routed towards the end and the Medians in the lead. I got a bit sloppy and my hoplites were flank charged by massed archers and broke. A unit of the Carthaginian Sacred Band went 1v3 against Median Sparbara and cavalry and was holding on like absolute heroes, but my units were ground down alarmingly close to autobreaking or trailing behind and trying to catch up. The Medes actually did push me over 60% with a skirmisher breaking... but then a mercenary hoplite rallied, and several Median fragmented units dissolved, sending their rout percentage through the roof (it went from mid-50s to 71%, the highest I've seen in the DL, I think). A couple of Median units rallied too, but not enough to swing things back around.

Excellent game, SpeedyCM, and absolutely terrible luck on your part that gave me the extra turn I needed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Like I said, an absolutely Pyrrhic victory on my part. Great game down to the end, and best of luck in the rest of your matches!

The hill where the Median Sparbara and archers initially deployed, and where the bulk of the fighting took place:

Bishuk (Persian) beat baldrick52 - Indo-Parthian 60 BC-30 AD 42-9

An unfortunate terrain feature for the Parthians as a stream ran down one side of the map, effectively curtailing the mobility advantage of the cavalry army.
Nevertheless a valiant effort to use the troops to their best advantage gave the Persians some scary moments, especially with the Pachyderm's.

Thanks for the game Richard.
