After refusing to leave his tent for a month on account of sighting a particularly vicious butterfly, during which his soldiers somehow managed to take a town, Ludendorf is shamed into moving to the Munakata shrine on the urging of KiwiWarlord.

The Mongolian army has cracked into the shrine's sake stores and had too much celebration over the weekend to notice the amassing counter-assaulting army. (Sorry for the delay, challenge picked up)

Confused reports stream in from the panicked accounts of routed Japanese and Chinese-Korean soldiers that have taken cover in nearby forts and houses, some claiming a catastrophe for the Japanese, others claiming that the Yuan infantry were pushed into a mass rout almost as soon as the battle began. Samurai, some still with their horses, huddle with ashigaru, spearmen with crossbowmen with no regard for Yuan order and discipline. In some bizarre instances, Yuan and Japanese warriors hide together until language gives nationality away and small skirmishes break out in shrines and village marketplaces. The shrine's warrior monks are unaccounted for, and there is no sign yet of the dreaded Mongol cavalry. Either all are dead, or they are yet to depart the battlefield...

Ludendorf draws BobGanoush 67-61.

According to Ludendorf, a great swarm of Mongol cavalry threatened to surround the Japanese army. Mounting his great warhorse, Ludendorf led a charge directly into the midst of the Mongol ranks, scattering them everywhere, laying them low, present everywhere at once, the cream of Samurai nobility putting their opposite numbers to flight. The opportunity for a decisive victory was only lost when the infantry (called 'foot plodders' by Ludendorf) panicked left the field in a rout, while the cowardly Sohei barricaded themselves in their shrine and prayed for help.

...according to less delusional accounts from the rest of the army, the wealthy, high ranking horse samurai and their attendants routed almost instantly in the face of a deadly and well executed push by Ganoush's Mongol cavalry to envelop the left of the rapidly advancing Samurai foot, a threat that Ludendorf had his men shy away from confronting until it was almost too late. Despite their supposedly senior brethren singularly failing to block the Mongol flank attack, it was the ordinary foot samurai and ashigaru that pushed forward, slammed into and routed most of the ill-prepared Yuan foot. Unfortunately, an opportunity for a decisive breakthrough was lost as a series of expertly timed charges by Ganoush threw the Japanese infantry into panic in turn, the Japanese having little answer to the Mongol cavalry in the open having been abandoned by their own nobles (with the exception of a single band of Samurai cavalry who fought extremely bravely and helped to stabilise the situation after unexpectedly breaking through the weaker Mongol tribesmen). It was only the arrival of the much-maligned sohei, many wielding little in the way of equipment and for most of which this was their first battle, who managed to sow enough confusion to break the momentum of the Mongol advance and allow both sides to disengage in almost complete confusion. Control over the shrine remains unclear.

As for Ludendorf, the more reliable rumours suggest that he hid in his tent the whole time, peeking out occasionally only to yelp as a stray Mongol detachment rode by and only daring to come out once he had a satisfactory answer to the very pertinent tactical question of 'have they stopped killing each other yet?'

It's nice to hear the Yuan tried their very best to defend the shrine...and succeed! I hear from the shrine's Monks they've accepted large numbers of Yuan novices, and the Mongolians are busy regaling and training many of the monks in Mongolian throat singing (and in some cases slitting!) Hopefully, we may have news soon from Kashii

• Bob remains in control of the Munakata shrine

• New challenges may be issued, but Ludendorf's next challenge may not be for the shrine

Hojo are unbeaten thus GDod's Challenge has failed and the Yuan Army retreats to Izuhara.

Sorry Brian, you may have misinterpreted the rules.

The Attacker needs to win the Battle whereas the Defender only needs a " no result " or a " draw " to Hold the Shrine. As Yuan were occupying the Shrine they were the Defender.
Are you using the rule: If a player challenges for a town/port, or shrine, and the rival faction cannot get a player's army to it within four game-days it automatically falls to the challenging faction?

Since the Hojo left the town and are the last army to enter Kashii, they become the challenger and the Yuan become the defender ... See Clarification post GDod 22/5 18:57 - The last person to move to a province is the challenger

KiwiWarlord has brought Kashii back into Nihon after 4 days of occupation and is now, on June 5th, moving from Kashii to Defend the Munakata Shrine 2 days after the dreaded Yuan horde of BGanoush began chasing the Monks out.

Here be the Rules.
Gavin if these Rules are incorrect please update them or make them easier to understand.

DIVINE WIND - THE RULES

To win a faction must control all but four provinces to control Japan

GENERAL

There are no turns but a player may only issue one challenge at a time for any town/port, or shrine, bordering, or connected by a designated route, to any of their factions towns/ports or shrines, until the result is posted.

Acceptance must be posted once the challenge has been posted. (Open battle, large armies, wide, agricultural terrain (except Imari and Komoda, which is hilly)

First challenge posted bumps any subsequent challenge for the town/port, or shrine, until the challenge is resolved and the result is posted.

First challenge posted for a town/port, or shrine occupied by an opposing player's army stops movement away until the challenge is resolved.

Unanswered challenges loose the town/port, or shrine after one week.

Players may move freely between friendly towns/ports, or shrines and those connected by a sea lane to challenge or defend a town/port, or shrine.

You may move through a town/port, or shrine even when it is occupied by a friendly army if the move is posted prior to a challenge for that town/port, or shrine.

If a player challenges for a town/port, or shrine, and the rival faction cannot get a player's army to it within four game-days it automatically falls to the challenging faction.

Unsuccessful challenges cannot be posted again by the same player for the same town/port or shrine until they have challenged for a different town/port, or shrine.

RETREATING AFTER A CHALLENGE

If a town/port, or shrine, is taken, or the challenge is unsuccessful, the unsuccessful player must return to the town/port, or shrine they advanced from. If unable to do so, the nearest town/port, or shrine.

If more than one neighbouring town/port, or shrine, the path of retreat is random.

Hence, it is possible (but not likely) that more than one player of a faction may occupy a town/port or shrine when they are forced to retreat.
(In this instance, if again challenged, the defenders may decide who defends. If the challenger is successful both defenders must again retreat to the nearest town/port or shrine. If two are available, they will retreat to a different town/port or shrine.)

CHOOSING SIDES
Armies declare a side and choose from the Genko DLC, either:-

Invaders - Yuan.

Japanese - Hojo.

WEATHER
Clearly, weather played a significant role in the invasion of Japan . To replicate the ‘chance of a divine wind’

The Mongols have a 25% chance that they will be affected when moving by sea.

The Japanese have a 10% chance of an adverse effect.

If rough seas are encountered, the affected player must take 2 units of raw troops for each rough sea encountered, or the maximum, which ever is lower.

SHRINE EFFECTS

Japanese players attacking or defending a shrine must use all warrior monks available.

Weather effects do not apply to attacking or defending shrines.

You are quoting the rule, which decides whether a town falls through a faction unable to get a force back to contest the town. It does not determine that they are the defender.

Since the Hojo left the town and are the last army to enter Kashii, you become the challenger and the Yuan become the defender ...I agree the colour of the town should have remained Hojo colours.

The rules were clarified on 22/5 Brian and it assumes that when returning to a province regardless of time period you are attacking a besieging force, and unless you can win against them, they remain besieging the town/shrine.
