I had the honour of holding the field, and therefore the obligation to report a hard fought draw [score 59 to 48] between:
Chris Townsend's Kingdom of Soissons 461 AD w/ Germanic Foot Tribes and
Kartronomical's Rhoxolani 350 BC with Sarmatian allies

The map roll was again good for the Kingdom, giving what looked like home territory, extensive woods on both flanks and a decent open space in the middle. The Kingdom's medium troops went into the woods on the left, heavy foot held the centre, and warbands with skirmishers went into the woods on the right. The Rhoxolani wisely brought what they could of irregular, peasants and skirmishers to contest the woods, and lancers to support their mounted bowmen in the open ground. The woods created a game of cat and mouse, with neither side knowing whether they were cat or mouse, producing continual surprises throughout the game. The Kingdom's cavalry reserve opened up the battle in the centre at about the same time that some sub-Romans routed, so the heavy infantry/cavalry battle degenerated into a series of encounters between small groups, trying to find and avoid flanks. Meanwhile, absent those future surprises, each side claimed one of the woods as their own. Many of the little battles featured fragmented units holding on for several turns.

It was a good game, and a draw was definitely the right result!

Chris Townsend's Kingdom of Soissons 461 w/ Germanic Foot Tribes defeat Indibil's Roman 425 w/ Western Hunnic allies 46 to 13.

Given the mostly open map, the Kingdom brought maximum cavalry, possibly surprising the Roman's, who decided to send their heavy cavalry central reserve to support their right flank cavalry. The central infantry and the cavalry on the other flank essentially fought to draws, but the Kingdom's cavalry and infantry achieved a favourable position around some rough before the Roman heavies arrived and manged to win the flank by shear numbers.

      Good game!

      Chris Townsend's Fatamid Egyptians 1074 w/ Crusader allies defeat Bagatrix1805's Free Canton 1200 w/ German allies 47 to 8.

For a dry terrain, there was a lot of water - a stream crossed the map, which included a small swamp, and there was a separate small lake on the Free Canton's right flank. After some maneuvering, the Free Canton anchored their right on the lake, and advanced towards the swamp on their left. The advance on the swamp was successful, despite some Bedouin distractions, but the small lake was too small, and a crusader led attack defeated the Free Canton knights, leading to a rout of that flank and part of the centre.

      Good game.

Stones1985 (Dabbuyid) beat Morat (French/Viking) by a score of 63 to 36. A tough fight which largely revolved around a small steep hill in the middle of the battlefield. The Dabbuyids came out on top mainly because they had more troops that were able to deal with the rough/hilly terrain.

      Thanks for the game.

The displayed screenshot which was taken at the end of the battle shows the terrain features. Both armies deployed on the western side of the battlefield with the Avars in the open facing the Khorasanians who held the northerly gap between the woods.

Wary of the enemy's elephants the Avars tried to get into the enemy rear through a wide encircling movement through the eastern half of the map. That was overly optimistic given the unsuitable terrain which heavily constricted their exit but it did have the advantage of the Khorasanians dividing their elephants. Two went north to block the exit and the other pursued the Avars by a shortcut next to the woods which was soon occupied by supporting archers. The Avars launched repeated arrows storms particularly targetting the nearby elephant which was also suicidally attacked by their sole irregular infantry. With their arrows mainly depleting to low, weakened by return fire and with the arrival of the other elephants and supporting forces the Avars beat a hasty retreat back to the western open area losing a number of trapped units.

In the fire actions there they managed to finally break the heavily damaged elephant and destroy some enemy infantry but their low fire had no effect on the other elephants. With time running out the Avars were greatly relieved to emerge with the draw. Thanks Rob for a good game.
