Right side of map was unavailable due to mountains although there was a valley between slopes offering access to the enemy. British ignored the valley on deployment, but had to rush some infantry there as the Roman and Horse tribes were moving some cavalry down it. Initial fight in main area was between the Roman and Germanic mounted lancers against the British warbands and Roman allied infantry line with chariots in support. Warbands managed to hold against the lancers and their skirmishers helped to thin the lancers. The Roman infantry, having held back to guard their side of the valley followed up a few turns behind the lancers and their auxilia began to melee with the warbands. The British were having success in the melees in the centre and had built a lead by thinning some of the lancers, but the cavalry force sent down the valley smashed through the rushed British defence and were now threatening the right just as their superior heavy foot were arriving and overpowering the British left. Another turn and British would have lost 3 or 4 units so the victory came at a crucial time. GG

The battlefield on the Russian side was a big valley with woods on both sides and two small paths on the outer sides of the woods. As the Russian army lacked any javelin units, the Byzantines managed to dominate unchallenged in both forests. The Russian army included only 3 heavy cavalry units, while the Byzantines had 3-4 times more. On the other hand, Russian infantry was far more numerous and seemed like an unstopable wall for the Byzantines. The Byzantines realized that a frontal attack was doomed, so they managed to outflank both sides with three cavalry units on each side, while at the same time, they tried to stall/avoid infantry engagement. When the infantry fighting started, the situation seemed hopeless for the Byzantines. Thanks to their luck, some of their units managed to beat their opponents, and 2 of the routed Byzantines managed to rally. As the Byzantine cavalry prevailed against the smaller Russian one, they started attacking isolated Russian infantry units, and in the end achieved a difficult victory, in a battle that 5 turns before seemed to be lost for them!
