The map favoured the samnites, it was a true uphill (sic!) fight for the romans. Five steep hills and two lower hills, small stream in center. My original plan was to man the steep hills (and the forest) on my side of the stream and wait for the romans, but then two samnites put on their running shoes when chasing off a couple velites (both ran 4 squares after the velites), moving on top of two of the steep hills on the roman side of the stream. First I did curse a bit, but then ordered everything to follow, hoping the two fore-runners would hold the hilltops for long enough for rest of my army arrive to their rescue. On my right side three javelinmen climbed the rough hill just moments before the roman velites would have arrived (they prolly had been issued elsewhere first, as the velites should have had time to enter the hill first), and the two samnites held the central and left most hill long enough for the samnites arriving in to the fray. On my far right my cavalry surprisingly got mauled quite hard, even though I had thought I would have the upper hand in the cavalry melee. In the end the samnites began to roll the flanks, and though the romans did beat up the etruscan imitation legionaries in the center, it was too little too late, as they were then swamped by samnites from all directions.

The map certainly didn't favour me, but I was outplayed in any case, and a billiard table wouldn't have altered the result. It might had adjusted the score a little in my favour, but I'd still have been beaten. Good game, and well played Swuul.

Best Wishes

Mike
