by Geffalrus
Division A

Geffalrus (Macedonians) defeated XLegione (Antigonids) 43-11

Sandwiched between a bunch of Carthaginians and Romans, XLegione and I had a nice Diadochi showdown. In a bit of early hilarity, both sides brought very similar armies; small amount of cavalry, two elephants, substantial skirmisher contingent, medium infantry/hoplites in support, and some pikes. In XLegione's favor, he was closer to the central hill and could easily claim it with his slightly larger force of pikes. However, most of my pikes were Veterans, so the Antigonids were less than enthusiastic about coming down off the hill. Using some tricks learned in a recent battle with the Persians, I was able to gain a small skirmishing lead, but nothing decisive enough to threaten the Antigonid hill position.

Welp, when in doubt, march it out; I gathered all my pikes and elephants, and did a force march around the hill in pursuit of some wayward thureophoroi, while my cavalry went on a wide ride in the opposite direction. The Antigonids did their best to rotate and redeploy, but a sudden tragedy struck them. While falling back, a pike unit with general failed it's cohesion test! I could not resist the temptation, and sent in my infantry and elephants to exploit the vulnerability and take the hill. With the pikes out of position, the Antigonid thureos attempted to hold off the advance of the Silver Shields. The bad fortune continued, however, as the thureos failed their cohesion checks and broke, unnerving the nearby pikes even further, and startling the Antigonid elephants. A general died in the midst of that chaos, twisting the knife even further. The dominoes continued to fall, and the Antigonids did not have the time needed to stabilize the situation.

Good game to my opponent.

The hill is mine!

Division B

oscarius (Seleucid) beat IMC (Samnite) 43 - 12

My opponent established himself on a mild hill in the far corner of the map and situated his cavalry in ambush so our armies took a lot of maneuvering before they established combat. The Samnites were justifiably concerned to meet the pikes, catraphacts and Roman-style infantry of the Seleucids on the flat while I knew the veteran Samnites to be no slouches either (especially with the uphill advantage). I attempted to coax my foe down from the hills with my superior firepower but my opponent only decided to commit after my light horse located his large cavalry ambush force lying in wait. With my army quite stretched he scrambled the cavalry forth from the forest to try and roll my flank what was thwarted by a single unit of lowely milita thureophorai who threw off many charges. As fighting began on the flat right hand side of the image I slowly transferred forces to the fighting on the right while leaving enough to contain his forces occupying the hill.

A very entertaining game, well-played.

Wooooo Weee. this was a doozie. The two armies got into a big scrum, and each side would alternate getting a flank attack on the other. Both sides held the lead multiple times, and any die roll could have changed the outcome. Excellent battle with an outstanding opponent...the score speaks for itself

The Goths made a very persuasive argument to Dacian separatists that they are best off under Gothic protection, especially in open terrain.

edb1815 (Carthage Hannibal in Africa) defeated oscarius (Seleucid w Parthian ally) 61% - 49%

A very close game. A flanking force of Carthaginian medium spearmen using a rough hill as a hinge managed to outflank the Seleucid line before the superior Seleucid infantry broke the Carthaginian center. The game ended with a melee furball in the center with elephants about to see off a much depleted cataphract and the Seleucid Romanized infantry about to be flanked.

gg- Well played.

Macedonczyk (Arab, Conquest) beat baldrick52 (Viking, Ireland) 40:0

I find the result very surprising. The game was difficult, the opponent lined up on a very difficult hill which paradoxically helped me because he didn't want to move (the river that defended my weak right wing also helped) and my skirmishes and massed archers could score first 15 points. Then my lancer made 2 flank attacks and somehow he withdrew without any damage. The second hero was my veteran Dailami who endured a fight in the forest with two berserkers.

phoyle3290 - Lombard 493-567AD defeats Garokan - Scots-Irish 50 BC-476AD - 40-7

I was somewhat able to take advantage of terrain, but ultimately my soldiers just prevailed. Head-to-head his Scots just couldn't stand up to my warbands especially with the support of my lancers. There didn't appear to be much more Garokan could have done. Hindsight is of course 20/20, but still.

Tough luck. Thanks for the game!
