Maybe solution is to send army choices to Pete with PM so nobody know what others select.
I don't take any notice of what other people post, I just make choices for armies with plenty of crash-bang-wallop to them, BUT, this is would be an interesting way of doing it.

I’ve just concluded a pre-tournament briefing with my Romans and they’ve expressed some concerns about the league starting so early.

Can you give some guidance on how social-distancing rules will apply? Surely this will advantage pikes and missile troops and my lads just want to get stuck in with some good old fashioned toe-to-toe bash and stab melée. Will they have to wear face masks? Will any testing be done before, during or after the battles? What is the new track and trace regime, is that just something to do with chariots?

Will our cavalry be permitted an unchallenged 30 mile raid into enemy territory prior to a battle to test their eyesight and fitness to ride? Can they take their young sons with them? In the case of a defeat, can any of our men concerned about childcare issues travel (let’s say) 260 miles to a friendly villa, under a flag of truce?

Also, they’ve heard rumours that every battle will be televised live. Does this mean they’ll be getting a greater share of the spoils after a victory? And, in Jupiter’s name, what the Hades is television anyway?

We’re anxiously looking forward to clearer guidance on these issues, and please be aware that any incompetence on the battlefield will clearly be a consequence, not of epidemiological insecurities, but of their consul acting as commanding general.

Best Wishes

Mike

If the Gods are pleased with our sacrifices to them Consul your Romans need have no concerns as a hopefully forested and mountainous map will mean your robotic hoard won't see my Etruscan and Samnite lightweights let alone engage in traditional Roman wrestling with them.... :D

Ah, the good old days. We suffer such nostalgia at our victories over our Samnite and Etruscan friends. Maybe you'd like to join our Sabine colleagues and attend a friendly athletics tournament? You are, of course, very welcome to bring your women.

Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

As someone will no doubt say hundreds of years in the future when Rome lies in ruins "Armies learn only from defeat"

Rome is welcome to keep fighting the battles of the past.....our new "Alliance of the Wronged" will be trialling some shiny new tactics ......we look forward to the attempt to overturn the old order ............

Sadly, the Senate is a bit short of competent generals at the moment, which is why they've chosen me to command. So I fear you might be right.

A bit of statistics coming your way :)

I have looked at the results from past seasons posted by Stockwellpete and did some basic analysis. As with the raw data, skill of players is not accounted for and I have excluded all pre-nerf data to keep everything current. Also possible allies are also not included.

Does anyone feel there is an advantage to who makes the first move?

I’m not degrading the question - I just wonder if anyone feels there is an advantage to moving first (or second for that matter)...

Edit: Sorry this is probably off the topic of the thread.

Honestly, probably not.

If there's a critical piece of terrain exactly in the center, the first mover may be able to seize it before the other player and gain an advantage. Then again, that sort of thing is usually closer to one side than the other anyway. Alternatively, sometimes I sort of like going second - you can see what your enemy is planning before you start to move, and react to/try and counter it.

Really though, with double-blind setup and the distance between the armies at start, I feel both sides have ample opportunity to react to their opponent's moves before contact is made.

I think there is an argument for larger boards to play on, more like real life, and allows for more Fog of war effects, obviously may favour more mobile armies, but is likely to make people think a bit more about Light units and balanced armies.

Could be an interesting statistic to record. FWIW, I think its probably player preference. With some armies I like to go second.

In league not.

There is little advantage in pair games (Slitherine tournament) to start secend and choose game which your opponent start. You see how your oponent set army and you have some inspiration for secend game. But if you send both games on server opponent can repeat the same thing.

I'm trying to play my first turn in Biblical, but when the turn tries to load it presents an error telling me it can't fiond a particualr unit and when I click okay a couple of times the game crashes. I am using th enew TT mod (otherwise I'd not have been able to accept my opponent's challenge), how do I overcome this?
