principeromanes (Bithynian 297-74 BC) defeats Bodhran (Thracian (Gallic) 280-212 BC) 40-14

The Bithynian army consisted almost exclusively of various medium infantries with a smattering of warbands and a tiny handful of cavalry for the flanks. The Thracians had comparatively more warbands and, as it turned out, cavalry.

The Bithynians deployed in a relatively long and thin line compared to the Thracians who deployed in much more depth. Seeing how weak their line was in the face of the warbands, the Bithynians immediately started to concentrate their forces towards the hill on their right. The Thracians started to pull back in the face of the Bithynian concentration and shifted all their cavalry towards the Bithynian weaker left flank that was also more exposed on the plane. Fortunately for my Bithynians, the Thracian cavalry was significantly slowed down in its repositioning because it had to go through a woods.

The superior numbers of Bithynian infantry proved decisive in the initial clash on the Bithynian right flank. The Thracian medium infantry was thoroughly outnumbered and quickly overrun. The collapse was so thorough that one Thracian unit broke from proximity checks without taking a single loss. The victorious Bithynians quickly turned their attention to the Thracian warbands, who were struggling against the Bithynian medium infantry that had managed to occupy a small hill. Notably, a superior close order warband fighting a thureophoroi disrupted and ultimately fragmented before falling back to safety.

Meanwhile, the Thracian cavalry had emerged from the woods and was facing a thinner screen of massed Thracian peltasts. And the Thracian cavalry was starting to overrun the massed peltasts, not so much from outflanking them as from simple charges. Similarly, the Bithynian medium foot facing the warbands was starting to fray, both from the warband combat strength modifier and from a Bithynian general dying in a combat that was otherwise going well.

Fortunately for my Bithynians, I was able to chase a Thracian light cavalry off the map, pushing me from 39 to 40 points in one of the least dramatic ways to end a match imaginable. I suspect it would have been distinctly closer if it had dragged on even one more turn. Merci pour le match.

principeromanes (Thracian (Gallic) 280-212 BC) defeats Bodhran (Bithynian297-74 BC) 51-25

The Thracian army lined up in a nice straight battle line, with a small marsh on their left and a forest on the right (at the bottom of the image). The Bithynian barbarians however formed up as a concentrated horde on a hill. For some reason, the Thracians decided that attacking uphill would go smoothly. The first hiccup was dealing with the Bithynian skirmishers – the Thracian army hadn’t brought any light foot of its own, so a few attempts were made to drive off harassing light foot with infantry charges. This brought the Thracian army closer to the base of the Bithynian hill than was intended, and started the battle before the longer Thracian line could position itself to wrap around the back of the Bithynian hill.

Oh well – time for a frontal charge with some warbands!

It did not go quite as planned. A few defending Bithynia medium foot got disrupted but they proved remarkably stubborn at holding out. Meanwhile, a few warbands disrupted and bounced off. Not going so well.

Meanwhile, the stronger Bithynian warbands were swinging down off the hill (towards the bottom of the map) and threatening to tear through the weaker units the Thracians had left to guard that flank. A very stubborn defense by the Thracian chariot did a lot to stabilize the flank.

All in all, it was a very closely matched battle – until a unit breaking on the far left flank of the Bithynian line triggered a chain collapse. A second unit of medium foot did what medium foot does (double drop cohesion checks). And the warbands ruthlessly pursued into the breaking units, causing an almost instant collapse of the entire Bithynian left flank.

This had been a very close, back and forth match until the last round. The Bithynians took close to 25% losses in that single round.

Merci encore pour le match.

Incredibly close and enjoyable game that could have gone either way towards the end. As it was the Scots were left with a Pyrrhic victory that will have them licking their wounds for a long time....

Deeter (Scotts//Irish) defeated Challeng1 (Ancient Brits) 55-23

The battlefield was marked by two parallel ridges separated by a narrow valley with a swamp on the British right and woods or the Scottish right. A few fortuitous flanking opportunities in the center broke the British line allowing a roll up on the one flank ending the battle. Good game!
