The Ptolemaic warriors prevailed through a mix of hiding in rough ground, using superior numbers to swamp the Roman right flank, and the most resilient Phalanxes I have ever prayed for. The Phalanxes held on long enough for the medium troops to get into the flanks and Enough of the lancers were successful to settle the deal. Nail biting stuff.

I have to say i have loved this kind of tournament , mirror + the fact we must choose an army was an excellent idea in my opinion , i hope there will be future seasons.

Captain savage (Roman) draws with Triarii (Ptolemaic) 50:37

The Romans tried to fight on the open plain rather than the hills but were sucked into a scrappy battle in complicated terrain. The Ptolemaics rushed to crush the Roman left wing by left their own left exposed to a sudden charge by the legions. The battle was dominated by a very high number of double drops as the troops on both sides crumbled when charged. The medium troops could not stand against the legions on either side even when in the rough and secure on hills. Plentiful rallies by the Ptolemaics meant that night fell before victory could be achieved (Romans had their share as well) A very exciting battle that did not disappoint.

Morbio (Persian) is victorious against Captain WalterSavage (Spartan) 63-50

A tough game where the Spartans held the high ground but were slowly whittled down by arrows until they came down to play. The Spartans did pretty well in melee, but the Persian numbers meant flanks were vulnerable and the Persians broke Spartan resistance an hour before dusk.

A good game, my thanks to Captain Savage... until the next time!

Division D

Kroche (Syracusan 412-281BC) 46% losses drew with carpenkm (Greek Mercenary 460-281BC) 55% losses

Hoplites opposed each other on two large hills in the centre of the battlefield. Syracusans attempted a main attack on their left flank and were held up by some stout defending. Syracusan right got sucked in to combat and were under the cosh quite early on from a combined Greek force of Hoplites and Massed Peltasts and were taken apart to a man. Syracusan cavalry threatened the Greek rear in the hope of forcing a victory, but were soundly stopped in their tracks and sent packing by the Greek rearguard.

Syracusan left eventually got control of that flank, but match ended in a draw with the two forces facing off on the vertical after each winning on opposing flanks.

Syracusan had a slightly higher morale as the difference in the score was due to superior rallying technique, otherwise a dead equal contest. GG to carpenkm in both our games.

A much closer match than the score shows. This mirror match was a tough one for the Greeks. Again the sides faced off on two sets of hills. The more aggressive Greeks advanced, but superior numbers on the right and a lucky fragment from a Greek Cav meant that the Syracusan right flank eventually routed their opposing Greeks. The left flank held and the right flank swept around this time. well played to Kroche for two very challenging and enjoyable matches. I'm sure we will meet again when i am not looking forward to your revenge.

Two games similar in being dominated by hills. The Samnites attacking uphill in the first. Grinding out wins, and then rolling up the Thracian line followed by a race to run down rallied Thracian warbands before the 24th turn - managed only just in time on turn 23. In the second the Samnites posted on a steep hill. After half the game spent moving to put the best Thracian warbands up the hill the obviously popular Thracian C-in-C promptly tripped over his sword on the way up and the discombulated surrounding units were gobbled up by the Samnites coming downhill. Unfortunately for the Samnites time ran out just before the 60% was reached.
