oscarius (Seleucid w. Parthian allies) beat lydianed (Roman w. Greek allies) 42 - 4

On a nice flat open battleground the stage was set for an interesting clashes of forces. Both sides utilised a mixture of pike and Roman-style infantry (the Romans having the latter from their Greek subordinates, the Seleucids via their argyraspides) with relatively limited skirmishing or cavalry assets. Mutually realising skirmishing to be indecisive the two forces advanced though things went poorly for the Romans from the get-go. My somewhat wider deployment allowed me to concentrate greater forces against the Roman veterans leading the formation. Even the Roman elite struggled to hold off a combined assault of cats, pikes and superior warbands unsupported. This needn't have spelled the end of the battle but further luck went my way when pushbacks resulted in a great series of advantageous flanking opportunities both by the infantry and my Parthian friends.

A fun game where unfortunately very little went my opponent's way.

The Arabs are back! Not my kind of army, but if I had not selected them, our defending Biblical champion, ianiow, would have had them again. I would rather play Arabs against ianiow than have him use Arabs against me. :)

A great game by Ulysisgrunt. If the terrain hadn’t favored me, I believe he would have won and it was very close as the score indicates.

Karvon - (Numidian 55bc-6AD with Roman allies) defeated MikeMarchant (Seleucid 302-301BC with Lysimachid allies) 55-28 for a 4-0 victory.

Mountains sealed off the Seleucid left flank and a large forest their right. A large forest lay on our own right flank with a hamlet on the edge facing the mountains. A bit beyond that, a large swathe of rough ground lay along the foot of the mountains on a lower ridge line. A large patch of rough ground was in about the middle of the field.

We deployed our assorted medium foot, Spanish, Numedian and Roman, in the forest on our right as well as our lone legionnaire and elephant. We deployed a line of mixed light horse and light foot across the field with our horse held back in reserve in the center. We hoped to wear down the enemy with our skirmishers and spread them out a bit as they chased them around, then unleash our massed medium foot on a few unsuspecting victims.

The Seleucids deployed in the center between the woods and mountains with pikes in the center, their horse on their right and elephants held back behind the pikes. A few medium foot were on each flank and light foot skirmishers deployed across their front.

We aggressively engaged the skirmishers and horse with our own lights all along the line. We saw off most of their lights and routed both elephants with missile fire when they charged in support of the surviving lights. The Seleucid horse got the better of our opposing lights, killing or driving off board most of those in their immediate area. We did shoot some of them up pretty good though first. In the center, the pikes and mediums took up the chase of our lights and their formation broke up as they surged in different directions. One especially aggressive phalanx chased a series of light foot well beyond its compatriots ending up next to the hamlet and forest where our mediums were waiting.

Our lights pelted the pikes as the mediums moved out to surround and engage. This of course drew the rest of the Seleucids after and a hot fight broke out around the hamlet. The Seleucids brought their victorious horse from their right to support their pikes right below the hamlet. We threw out more medium foot to fix the horse and survived their initial charges. We then sprung our elephant which proceeded to stomp horse after horse from the flank, sweeping them all away in short order. The first pike finally broke as did a supporting medium foot and the Seleucid army broke shortly after.

The final scene
