Re: Match completion, time controls and the reserve list . .

It is necessary in a tournament of this size (around 80 players) that a certain amount of behind-the-scenes monitoring is done to make sure the competition is progressing smoothly. In the first few weeks of a season, the main concern has been to make sure everyone has started playing and that there are no non-starters sitting in a division holding everything up. There were a couple of players like this in this first season.

Once it is has been established that everyone is underway, the next focus for me is the time control at the half-way stage on March 8th. So players who have not yet completed any matches in the various divisions can expect a (very polite) PM from me asking them how they are getting on and how many matches do they have in progress. This process is underway so some of you may already have received your PM. I know that a minority of players do find such PM's a bit intrusive, but I have to put the interests of the all the players in the tournament first and foremost. Really by now, if you have not completed 3 matches in a division then you should at least have 3 matches under way. The time control is not particularly harsh. It asks players to complete one-third of their matches in half the time that is available, but it is really important in terms of ensuring most, if not all, of the matches in each division are completed by the end of the tournament. Reserves, who have just joined the tournament, are exempt from the time control stipulation.

The final stage of the monitoring process will start during the 8th week of competition when I will start posting up on the forum lists of all the un-played or unfinished matches. I will also be sending PM's to the players concerned encouraging them to start. Any matches not completed by the end of the tournament will be subject to adjudication. Players who have shown a willingness to get their matches done and have communicated promptly with me can expect to get rather more from the adjudication process than players who are unresponsive.
