Division B
Challenge1 (Lydian) defeated Barrold713 (Boiotian League) 62-40
The 2 hoplite armies in the division drew up against each other and a predictably hard slog was played out on a mostly featureless plain. It was very close and ebbed and flowed constantly but it was probably the superior Lydian cavalry that eventually got behind the Boiotian battle line to clinch the day.
Very good game, thanks Barry.

Division D
MikeMarchant (Ghaznavid 962-1187 CE - Allies: Turkish) defeated KiFi (Sassanid Persian 591-628 AD) - 47/9
An entirely mounted army was fielded by the Ghaznavids, while the Sassanids fielded an evenly balanced army of mounted and foot. The field was clear and open, which suited the mounted well, but to the right of the Ghaznavid centre, ahead of the deployments area, was a pond. The Sassanid infantry were arrayed to the left of this pond, from the Ghaznavid point of view, while the Sassandid cavalry was deployed on the shorter, right side.
Originally eployed dead centre, the Ghazanvids moved switly to right to engage the Sassanid cavalry, sending a very small force of Turkish cavalry wide to the left flank as a small irritation. As fast as the Sassanid infantry tried to shift to their left, my mounted struck fast, Ghilman and elephants and light horse went in without fear, causing chaos. Cataphracts were taken easily by a combination of elephants and flank attacks, the rest of the Sassanoid cavarly was overwhelmed, encirceld and destroyed. Even the Turks on the other side of the field made mincemeat of the archers sent to face them.
The battle was over before the infantry arrived.
This was one of those strange battles where, despite having a large army, perfectly intact and unscathed, Kifi had lost enough troops to lose the game. If the battle had been able to continue for a few more turns I have no doubt the scores would have looked very different.
Bad luck, Kifi, and thanks for a great game.
Best Wishes
Mike
Thanks. It was enjoyable. It would have been a different battle If I had concentrated the Sassinids on one side of the pond.
Regards.

Division D
rs2excelsior (Roman) beat KiFi (Macedonian) 64-41
The Roman legion met the Macedonians on a largely open field, with a rough terrain hill on the Roman left and another patch of level, rough ground on the right. The Macedonian phalanxes were once again reluctant to advance into range of the Roman artillery, so the legions stepped off, aiming for the Macedonian right. The aim was to slam the legions into the hoplites and thureophoroi on the right flank of the main Macedonian battle line before wheeling to face the phalanxes, who could hopefully be surrounded instead of forcing a protracted head-to-head melee, where the Romans would be at a disadvantage. The battle developed into three parts. On the left, the Roman medium infantry occupied the rough hilltop, backed up by by skirmishers. The Macedonian lights drove off their Roman counterparts, but the Macedonian mediums couldn't dislodge the Romans from their strong position. When a Roman thureophoroi from the main fight came around behind the Macedonian infantry the Greeks on that flank fled, and the remaining Roman infantry kept a unit of Macedonian lancers pinned down, neither really able to attack the other. On the right, the Roman cavalry harassed the Macedonian left, drawing off some of their hoplites and phalanxes for a time from the critical battle in the center. The main Roman legionary force quickly saw off the hoplites and thureophoroi opposite them and quickly outflanked the first group of Macedonian pikes, who broke in short order. With some help from the Roman cavalry to keep their flanks secure, the Romans wheeled about and engaged the remaining pikes. A couple of last-minute rallies of Macedonian phalanxes brought the scores alarmingly close, but the Romans were able to swing it back in their favor and push the Macedonian army into fleeing the field.
Another bloody victory for the Romans, with the ground where the main engagement was fought being scattered with the fallen:

Thanks for the battle KiFi, and to my other opponents in the tournament. This battle closes out my first section of my first season of this tournament; I've had a lot of fun and learned a lot about how multiplayer differs from single player. Looking forward to seeing you in the next season!

Division B
gamercb (Achaemenid Persian 545-481 BC) beat General Shapur (Egyptian 570-525 BC) 68-39
On a desert plain with a few mountains to the north, dunes and broken ground, the Persians faced off against the Egyptians. The Persian cavalry proved to strong for the Egyptian chariots, driving them from the field whilst the Persian infantry just managed to hold their ground until the cavalry could return to take the Egyptians in the rear.
Thanks for the game. Colin
