A good hard fought game, but in the end a large hill with a rough top, a large stream AND a wood proved just to hard for the might of the Avar Nobles when faced with raw spearmen, mediocre armoured infantry, massed archers, AND smelly Elephants.

A juicy hill in the centre was the target of both armies, but the Italians didn't march too far once they saw the large number of mounted knights heading to occupy the hill for the Germans. There were two patches of rough ground (one in each armies zone of influence) where missile troops could trade shots. Italians had more heavy infantry, not all of it quality, and it was this that made the difference. The German skirmishers caused some casualties, but could not disrupt any units. The German knights did not have successful charges and when they did they were not favoured in their pursuit as often they would expose a flank that the more numerous Italians could exploit. Fighting was likely to be short as both sides had moved the majority of their forces into a small central area and the Italians won a couple of the early melees to weaken the Germans and held out everywhere else, especially with some fragmented units that held to prevent the Germans from getting more points on the board. A battle with a lot of swings. The Germans got an early lead with all their crossbow shooting. Once the Catalan almughavars and cav charged in, the battle began to even out. However, the Swiss finally came into battle and helped secure victory for the Germans.
