Why do I have this feeling that a discussion of wedging could come up in this thread?

As I said, mine was just an example. You must consider if you want to attack in a point, you must add a General to support your attack. If you have possibility, rear support it's fine too. Anyway, there is better chance to get 1HP3B with 6 dice than with 2. Sorry, again statistic and not history, but we need statistic to demonstrate that an historical tactic, or a presumed one, can be proficient in FOG. Better: that a certain combination of formations and troops is the best way to simulate an historical tactic with FOG.

I open a parenthesis. I think if we can find a way to simulate historical tactics with good FOG tactics, we promote a more historical behaviour also in tournament, don't you think? Not sure there is anybody who could be interested

Mmmmmm :? . How do you think to simulate a wedge? I suppose that wedges are formations in a scale that you cannot depict with this game, like Roman maniples (I hope this is the correct word in English for Italian manipoli). In other words, a wedge is a formation which is made by men represented by a single base, so a line of Macedonian Companion can be thought as a series of wedges.

2. Graham Briggs scenario is different. If you are going against missile armed troops who get extra dice at impact then the trade-off is more even and it is potentially viable to take the risk in column. But the real world problem is that it often pushes you into suffering CT tests from shooting at -1 for 1HP2 as only 3 bases count and often the same firepower will hit the column as would hit the 3 wide BG anyway (when you would need 3 hits rather than 2). Internstingly this part is actually more even the less armour you have as if you are unprotected MF you are likely to suffer 3 hits anyway!

That's true - however that BG is the one that will have the general and rear support . Also, if it's critical, some LF or LH can draw the fire.
Exactly my point Graham that its all about the skill with which you do the other things in practice when attempting this. Straight forward columns vs lines are not a good answer ... which seemed to be the origin of this rather long stream....but vs shooty types can help if you can shield them off with skill (which is actually fairly realistic as a tactic but not that easy to pull off)

As I know the answers to all the stats I think I am going to resign myself to counting thepage length just to see how far it can get :D

My new simulator predicts the expected length of a stream based on past intnsity of discussion and now shows an expected length of 9.3 pages for this one .. keep it up guys!

Amatuers - we got 19 pages on one topic on the list board and I'm sure you've managed extensive ones on the developers bord as well 8)

My opponent got a column of legionaires moving up on me last night.

First I got javelin LF up so he couldn't expand after impact. Then the LF javelin rolled a 6 forced a check and disrupted the legion. The Legion then frag'd to combat from some falxmen. The legion then bolstered to disrupted and lost to frag'd about 3 more times.

The column which granted was for manuevering reasons was really easy to harass and limtedt he fighting power of itself.
