I understand that the Potluck God is a fickle and mercurial diety...and clearly one who has cursed me.

I was more looking for advice on how to best use the Hungarian Rebels in battle. Though clearly some armies are better than others, I always assume that
there must be some tactic or technique to maximize their performance, and that the problem is at least in part that they are "saddled" with myself as Commander.

Has anyone discovered any way of getting the most out of them?

I have experimented with the Hungarian Rebels and they can play much like the Ottomans or the Poles if you get the right mix of forces. I played the computer using an army with 6 Haiduk musketeers and 6 armored Cossacks and Hussars. The light Hussars and Dragoons did yeoman's work harassing the Swedish cavalry while a Haiduk ambush from the prominent woods in the center of the map was able to distract the Swedish infantry.
With the low cost of Hussars I was able to use their carbines to disrupt the Swedish cavalry allowing my armored troops to charge home.
I agree that the Hungarians cannot win on an open battlefield. With a decent map allowing them to utilize their medium infantry effectively they can win. I beat the computer's Swedes 47% to 3%. Of course if the computer gives you an unbalanced force or a bad battlefield as so often happens you are sacrificed on the potluck altar I am afraid.
If you would like to try a game I am always open for a battle that gives me a reasonable chance to win.

Pot Luck Hungarian
First, cook up lots of Hungarian goulash. replace the potatoes and tomatoes with borrowed Polish cabbage. Leave pots of goulash and sticky English pudding on the field and retire to a nearby wood so the enemy are tempted to stop to eat their fill. Then when they are bloated by the humongous cabbage content and blocked by the sticky pudding they will sneeze from the high content of paprika the Hungarians put in their goulash and they should sneeze and either self explode from the build up of gases or blow themselves back from whence they came!

This also works with Jacobites, just replace the goulash with Haggis

I was about to set up our second game but I never took notice of the exact armies, and now I can only make out that it's Late Swedish vs Late Imperialist.
Hopefully you know more.

and none of them bloody work, even when I walk around my chair 3 times in a clockwise direction, throw salt over my right shoulder using my left hand, touch my head while saying out loud "touch wood" and kicking my dog (wasn't meant to be part of the ritual but she was in the way and it released some frustration...for me anyway)

so what exactly is the bloody password?

(all this was written in a very stern teacherly way with my glasses perched on the end of my nose)

Password was 'allforone' but for the sake of the dog I've changed yours to poordog Honest, it's not a ploy to unsettle the opponent before the match

Now who would have thought that the password would have no spaces between the words, when the cryptic clue had spaces between each word.

On a lighter side I have discovered that Russians from 1649 to 1661 are both Imperial and Anti-Imperial. YoungR and I are playing both playing with this army, and our return match will feature them again. I am expecting two very close games.
