The translation of the rules was extremely expensive and never really sold so we lost a lot of money on them so the current the plan is to make it English only.

However if the French community were to work on a translation it might be possible to include a low graphics version as an option. The layout costs of another version would probably make it prohibitively expensive so it might need to be raw that had to be read in conjunction with the English version for tables, diagrams etc. This type of thing is much more possible in a digital format.

If the cost of the "otherlanguage version" is the translation the ebook doesn't solve the problem, but if costs are related to the printing, stocking, delivering etc etc of 4 different books a paper English version and 4 ebook (30YW French, German, Spanish and Italian) are welcome :)

The issues were translations, layout, printing, stock and demand. We've only got rid of some of the issues.

Hi Ian,

I understand what you say about the translations of FOG, the french market is small , we're a niche market in the niche wargaming market;-) , the french translation was not so badly translated, it helps newbies to have a start, many of them buy the English version after when they are more accustomoted with the rules, the forum and community and club partners also help them to play;
it must not de forgotten that if you think you sold few French version in comparaison to other markets, don't forget that many of us bought the English version ruleset, the French version ruleset and the companions, I know many French players who bought and own the collection just because the books are beautiful with the osprey illustrations;

we would be able to translate the amendements, the greatest part of the rules are already translated ( many thanks to the French and Belgian guys who done the job) so it shouldn't be impossible to do it;

I don't own a tablet or a laptop for the moment (I recognize that I like books in general)I'm not very fluent in English and reading, searching, rereading many times in the rulebook in all the country I went was easy because the hardpaper book is small and , I think I wouln't have spent the same time on my computer to read, even if I know that future is on way ( and the winter is coming ;-) ;
we will wait the digital and paper Field of Glory V2.0 with impatience;-)

Best wishes

Gilles " the unmaskedfrenchjester FOG apostle "

I have heard that the Spanish version sold reasonably well, but maybe I am not well informed. Was this a problem with all translations or more with some languages that did not work? I know that FoG is played in some clubs just because of the translation, but I understand that it probably is not cost profit acceptable.

If I remember correctly the problem with the non English versions was simply that they did not sell enough copies to cover the relatively high costs of producing a rule set of that production quality in several languages. There may be enough wargamers in each country to make it viable, but they did not all buy it.

A fundamental problem was that the translations followed to far behind the release of the English version and by the release dates, most European players had already bought the English version. It was however always part of our plan and despite the problems we have no regrets about the experiment.
What it did seem to establish was that most Wargamers speak English to a high standard, even those from Manchester :-)

well i know that one of the belgian players already had started to translate the beta....

maybe he would be willing to translate the V2

i do not know what the deal would be.

i know i speak both languages well enough to do it. and with some help of other could have it checked if it is ok.

using the base of the previous version, so not everything has to be translated.

Hi ,

Best regards

thefrenchjester " joking with his Belgian Friends ;-) "

(*) no translation for that, only a different wording for the same meaning between French and Belgian.

I coordinated the French translation. I have all the files in Word. I can quickly change and send back the translation to JDM. He is aware, we exchange some e-mails about this recently. The decision is on his side. The problem is that the new text has to fill the same space on the original design...
And about some difficulties with some sentences in the first translation, just have a look at the English ones. What we made is a translation not an adaptation.
I also want a paper version of the 2.0, and a translation (could be a pdf file to print)
