Hi to all,

what i never really understood is why is "Field of Glory " a world without citys. For me it is the only real problem the game has.
Could this be changed in the future ?
Best regards

Micha

Hi Micha!

New terrain elements (like city/village hexes, walls etc.) are a matter that can be found in the collective wish lists that circulate here in this forum for several years now.
I hope that the new FoG will feature stuff like this ... some day.

Completely non-trivial task. Unity and Real Basic are different universes. Think of translating an Ancient Mandarin math treatise into modern English (or any other modern European language), and then trying to determine how to turn it into a Hollywood blockbuster while maintaining the spirit and intent of the original.

Ok, maybe it's not really like that at all.

I know it is a big task - and I am not expecting anything until the autumn, at the earliest. But I was just wondering how Dan was getting on as we haven't heard from him for a while.

Does seem like it would rock, doesn't it?

Hello guys!

Just a quick update for you, with the actual state of the development:
- Editor is finished, together with importing the old scenarios/maps formats, saving in the new scenario/map formats, and many improvements
- DAG is finished, for all the addons
- all the scenarios are in, including the new ones from the BP1
- there are also lots of different things added into the game (GUI improvements, in Editor, DAG, scenarios listing; game console and debug console, both also saving log files, and so on)
- we're currently working on finishing the multiplayer (PBEM) system (connecting to the server, checking the serials and login info, getting and displaying the current games/challenges list)
- we're also currently working on gameplay (movement system and limitations)
- no work at all has been done on AI yet

At this moment, the Editor is ready to be presented for betatesting (which should happen pretty soon, some scenario designers going to be invited to play with the new editor). In a month or so, we should also have the core gameplay ready for betatesting (PBEM/HotSeat) :)

Thank you for your patience,
Dan

Interested to know more about movement limitations? Undrilled (excluding light troops) units going backwards?

Other things possibly that may have been touched upon

1 I know Fedem has mentioned this but cav without lance will stand agst lance armed troops.

For example undrilled avg, prot, bow sword will stand agst sup, prot, undrilled, lance and sword.

2 Troops that will normally evade or are on always evade will sometimes stand when contacted by an enemy pursuing unit. I have had a few examples, where cav who are on always evade and have been charged by hf will also stand.

3. Sometimes when a unit has been routed, one of the units that was in contact but did not actually fight has limited movement options.

4 I think ally gens can support non allied troops.

5 When a gen is in rout his ZOC still stands so units can march, maybe they have the benefit of a +1 for rallying as well?

6 Break offs. I started this I think. When mounted charge into units that on impact theya re down, for example, armoured, sup cav vs prot off spear (average). I would place units behind them to stop them breaking off. They have better factors in combat? In the TT game if you are unable to break off at least 1 inch, mounted units drop a cohesion level.

Also have noticed that some mounted troops will stay in contact with enemy foot for longer than normal. For example on impact they ahve not disrupted foot and in combat still not disrupted they will break off. There are those times when they remain in contact with a non-disrupted unit. Maybe you have implemetned something in the system which allows them to stay in contact one more turn as they ahve an advantage in combat?

7 Haven't seen it for a while but there were some rare ocassions where a routing unit would burst througha friendly unit in combat and so disrupting it.

8 There does not seem to be any benefit for charging a unit in the flank, when you are behind it's flank, apart from charging bow armed units.

9 Foot units with lf support seem to be better than units without lf support. They cost the same but lf supported units can shoot (a little damage but it all adds up). They also give support shooting as well, I believe. If this is true, maybe 1 pt more.

10 Maps. Maybe you could give the player who has lost initiative the option of erasing x number of hexes?

There's probably more but can not think of anything at the moment.

Looking forward to the changes anyways. Hope don't have to buy a new set of rules though?

I believe the basic plan is no intentional changes in the rules for the initial release of the new version and this will available as a free upgrade for all current owners. I don't know what the specific plans are beyond that for changes in the rules and game play as further upgrades or as a new version that would need to be purchased separately. Oath of Fealty should be released as a new add on after the free upgrade is released.

Good news about the planned imporovements for FOG - a game that I have much enjoyed playing along with its various expansion packs. One thing that I have really missed has been the absence of a proper manual. The wiki pages are a great help but I do like to have available a comprehensive reference that you don't need to go online for. Even better if any new manual could be ebook friendly (kindle for me) - like the the ones that the Grand Strategy team have just produced for their latest update of that 2WW game. A long way from ancients but highly recommended btw.
