Installing via Slitherine = Old Version

Post by Stu2bee »

So I clicked on the Free to play Order of Battle featured on the slitherine site. I didn't want to install steam, so I chose to download directly.
It downloaded version: 6.1.7 (zip)
Then I launched and installed. Went to check for updates via the gui, and it says it's too old and takes me to another download website.
This one lists
V7.1.4 Installer 2.8 Gb
V7.1.6 Update 2.6 Gb

So.....
- Is this really the expected behavior for a new user install, to have them install an older version (2gb), then download the newer 7.1.4, (2.8gb), then install the patch (2.6gb) ?

Right now I'm attempting to skip the 7.14 and go straight from 6.1.7 to the 7.1.6...not sure if it will work.

Maybe I'm confused and these are different products. Beats me.

No, you're doing everything by the book. Slitherine's book, that is.
Steam has its own issues, but it's definitely more user friendly.

I'm guessing that when the newer Installer came out in February (7.1.4) they updated Steam, but forgot to update their own downloads page to the newer base version.
This is assuming you can clean start with 7.1.4.

There's nothing wrong with the installer as far as I know. Install 7.1.4 first, then the 7.1.6 update.

It's just a hassle to find the right files in the download section, especially for new users/buyers. The link to the old version's confusing and unnecessary. That's what I was trying to criticize. There just shouldn't be a problem finding and downloading the right files nowadays. You're not the only one being confused and complaining, you know... :?

And just to clarify...the method I used added the old version zip to the Checkout box in slitherine, and thats what it downloaded. So I think the old version is on their official download link in the product page.

Thanks for confirming, and thats exactly what I had to go through.
So my purpose in posting was to inform Siltherine of a less than great customer experience for installation of a game they are promoting. The forums were the only avenue I found, so I assume that the hope is that they keep an eye on the forums. If there is a different avenue for notification please let me know.

You could also email support@slitherine.co.uk
They are fairly quick to respond in my experience.

It seems that the download address of the "Old Version" is on the Matrix website (?)
