WiFi problem and trying to open FOG2

Post by youngr »

Hi

I suspect you won't be able to help me much here but I thought I'd try out of desperation!

I have FOG2 on Steam on my laptop. No problem accessing the game on my home WiFi. However, I'm trying to play the game with poor WiFi that is very slow in a remote location (offshore West Africa). No matter what I try, I cannot open Steam to access FOG2. It tries and fails and only allows me to play offline, and only then sometimes. I am also playing Pike & Shot which isn't on Steam. I can access and play this but it is slow to download/upload to the server and I can only access it at limited times of day. Is there any way I can access FOG2, or increase the chance of accessing it, even when I pick good times of the day? I suspect the answer is no but I thought a more extended explanation from someone far more knowledgeable than me would at least set my mind at ease.

Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard,

Just posting to offer moral support. I am afraid I have no idea how you could solve your problem, but hopefully someone from technical support may be able to help. (Though it seems unlikely if the problem is the connection to STEAM).

(And you thought mid-Wales was a third world country. Incidentally my wife and I had a very nice day out to Powis Castle yesterday. I expect you have already been there, but if not, you really should, to see the Clive Museum and all the Indian weapons and armour.).

If it is any consolation, the other players in the FOG2DL have been warned that you might be incommunicado until you get back.

Best Regards,

Richard

Hello Richard

Good to hear from you! I guess it's my own fault trying to play games when in the middle of nowhere and I'm supposed to be working :D

Powis Castle is indeed well worth a trip out especially when the roses are out in the lower garden.
If you're ever up near me again, the Battle of Pilleth site and the Observatory above Knighton are worth a visit too.

FOG2 is great btw. Excellent work and I really look forward to playing Rise of Persia when I eventually get home.

not knowing the system it's hard to say and even harder to improve things either tbh,

Code: Select all

one you you can do on a laptop is run it on power eg mains, and not the battery which will or should help, turn of the screen saver and power saving apps, which will help with cpu and gpu cycles etc then turn off all the default or auto run stuff on start up, just leaving on the basic

with less apps and programs auto running, less chance something else will try and download / upload in the background, as long as you remember to turn off auto updates etc while on wifi,...

none of this will make any difference in Africa mind you on a really poor connection i'm sorry to say, you could tether to your phone, but the bill might got too high for most and me inc

Thanks for that, much appreciated. As you say, I can try and optimise the efficiency of my laptop and see how it goes. Worth a try at least!
Cheers
