Surfaced subs

If I remember correctly surfaced subs should only be detected by enemy units next to it.
But destroyers may use their sonars to detect a surfaced sub 2 hexes away.Is this WAD?

Right. Good find. Obviously not WAD.
And remember this tip indicating that planes should be able to detect subs, too:

Maybe a stupid question, what is the meaning of WAD ?
