Artillery and Fortifications

Post by walkerd »

Hi

Brand new but have had the rules for a while and 6 or so army books. Lots of reading and pondering.

It seems to me that manoeuvre is vital rendering fortifications and artillery more of a nuisance then an asset. The reason I ask is that my primary army is Ottoman Turks so deciding on an historical deployment, strong centre with infantry and artillery deployed behind FF is handing an advantage to the enemy.

I also understand there will be a campaign / siege supplement at some stage, is this correct?

I think there could be real advantages to using that historical deployment. Janissary MF behind FF could easily deny a huge segment of the board to your opponent, allowing you to concentrate on winning elsewhere. I think it would have a good chance of wrong-footing the enemy, being fairly uncommon.

Someday. There are more army list books that need to come first.

Played a few game with historical Ottoman deployment and in FOG this is typically...
  • buy a fortified camp
buy 6-10 field defences as well and put these 15MU into the centre
Put some cheap bowmen in front of the camp
Put some artillery either side of these
Put 2 small foot BGs either side of these
See what enemy do with this obstacle and have some fun with your other troops. If you put your baggage only 2 wide in the centre the artillery protect it pretty well.

All good fun and a historical representation of the large fortitifed central camps around which the Ottomans often manouvred.
