melee and charge

We had a ongoing melee between LF . C are cataphracts and B Bowmen ( LF ) on the same side , J javelinmen ( LF ) on the other side . the melee between B and J goes on .

it is now the impact phase of C and B .The player wanted to charge with his cataphracts as on his right side ( the left of the javelinmen ), he could contact them . he coukld have done it by just advancing the leftmost two cataphact bases ( in red ) as they had a clear way to go ( no friendly LF in the way , one ennemy base in view as the javelinmen have a line one base longer than the bowmen ) . He wanted just to charge trough the already in melee bowmen ( LF ) . we argued that he could not do it as he was in melee with those units .

We just want to check what we should have done . Did he have to declare a charge and sent 2 bases against the poor LF javelinmen or could he just ignore them because they were already in melee .

I have edited the diagram to what I think you were describing.

The cataphracts can drop one file back as they charge (the only formation change allowed in a charge is to drop back one file to avoid friends. They will then it the end of the BG of javelinmen and in the melee phase could potentially expand to get an overlap.
