Top 5

It is 1965 and the US ground war in Vietnam is in full swing. As a US Army commander, wage a counter-insurgency (COIN) war to secure the Ia Drang valley, on the border with Cambodia.

Top 5

Post by Mylo42 »

I am 45 years old and have been a wargamer for 30 years. In that time my priorities have changed when it comes to what I look for in a wargame. Here is my Top 5 list in order of importance:

1 - Playability. There is always a tradeoff between Realism and Playability. I tend to look for games that lean towards playability. A full game being played in/around 3 hrs is perfect for me. Games I have enjoyed in the recent past are BotB and DoM by Shenandoah Studios.

2 - Challenging AI. I do mostly solo gaming.

3 - iOS UI. The iPad has become my gaming platform of choice. I game when I'm on the road, staying in Hotels.

4 - Functional graphics over eye candy. I prefer production resources go into game play.

5 - Strong emphasis on logistics and importance of supply. IMO, the easiest way to crank up the realism factor of a wargame is to put a lot of emphasis on this very important, if not crucial, aspect of warfare.

I do hope V65 hits the mark on what I'm looking for as I have really been wanting a Vietnam wargame that captures the feel of that conflict. I would be interested in what the age/wargaming experience of other playes are and what their top 5 might be.

Myles

That is SO refreshing to hear. I am looking to really giving the updated version of V65 a go, I will post my comments, for whatever they are worth. So far, I really like what I see with V65.

I don't tire of good games, I still wish I had my Apple IIe so that I could play Geopolitique 1990 again,....that was an awesome game.....based on the 'future'. Played it until the floppy wore out. Yep, the 80's.....interesting times.

Silent Sevice on casette.......awesome. :D

Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

A VERY valid point here being, it was the gameplay that we loved, our imaginations filled in the gaps and shortcomings of the graphics in those days. I recall being very entertained and engrossed in many of those early games. If you share the same thoughts, I have even more hope for V65.
