Early views - Thoughts - Desires - Wants :)

Post by Overread »

Bought recently and been playing around and a few things have stood out to me whilst I've been playing that I feel would be worth mentioning. I'm sure I'm not the first and won't be the last to mention some, but I hope that by mentioning them we might have a chance of seeing these features added into the game in time.

Firstly I'd also like to say that whilst this seems like a wish/complain list its not. What it is is a list of things that I feel would enhance a game that I'm already greatly enjoying playing. It's been great fun this far in its own right as a game and I look forward to seeing the DLC later this week as well as seeing what else comes for the game in the future (big hints that Tau and Eldar might appear soon in the intro video as they are picked out and shown up-front to use - but Chaos and others will be fantastic to see in-game).

I was also rather pleased to hear a voice actor I think I recognise from Warrior Kings (the commissar). I think its the same guy - even after all those years since that game.

So now onto the list of thingies :)

1a) A victory score page when one wins or loses a match. Could be as simple as how many turns it took, but would be nice to get a little statistical break down from the match - things like how many units were lost etc... It's quite a common thing in most strategy games and the game feels like its missing something without it.

1b) Tied to the first point it would be great to have a rankings page on the main menu of the game. So that we can keep track of the senarios we've played and the score we got - or tie it into the mission selection page under the map/details. Basically a way for us to see at a glance how well we did in a mission and at different difficulties - even if its just showing the "top score/number of turns/points etc.." per difficulty.
It would be a great feature for replaying the same maps and improving as a player without having to keep a notepad handy to record it.

2) In the senarios menu it would be great to see more detail. Instead of a rough area map with a flag; show the actual map of the mission play area. An idea of units we get deployed - the size of the armies etc.... would all be very helpful when choosing what we want to play (esp as the community and company make more and more maps for us to play on).
A list of names as it is now is rather difficult to pick out a fun new mission to play if we've no idea what we are getting in-for.
It would also be an ideal thing to allow us to play senarios on points not just on pre-made armies so that we can "build" our own army for a game not just use the premade (though I appreciate that this would also mean that the AI would either be easier to beat with a fixed default army or would need coding to allow it to make a decent choice at picking its own army roster).

3) Story Presentation - story presentation; esp between tutorial and campaign could do with another few panels to introduce us to the fact that the orcs have landed. Unless I manage to skip a section without realising it we go from "we are going to poke this big rock in the sky" to " orcs are landing run for the hills" in almost no time with no change of state presented. A minor point in story telling; but I feel that story telling is important to get right in the singleplayer aspects.
In other words fleshing it out with some more depth would be fantastic.

4) Linked into fleshing the game out with more lore and depth into the world it would be great to see a "library" page on the main page. Something that lets us see the whole army ranges installed within the game (inc any mods/addons/DLC expansion as they are added). So we can see all the armies, compare, contrast and just view them without having to launch into the game as a specific army (and on the right map that allows selection from the full army rosters).
If this could go further and have written lore of units that would be even better - concept/design art etc... (appreciating that many entries will be conbined for the lore where one has tanks or units with the same core features and only different weapons - though that depends how far and how detailed the lore goes of course).

5) Visually in the game it would be nice when using troops to see all the units firing when they attack not just one. For special weapons (like rocket troops) where only one is firing that's fine as its the only one holding the weapon - but when you've a group of lasgunners and only one is actually firing it seems very odd.

Point to add that I've just noticed - but when you have a mission and you get objectives half way through (as happens a good few times) the info box to remind you what your objectives are does not update. So if you happen to save after a mission objective change and then leave the game and return you can't get any reminder as to what you're supposed to do - only the out-dated objectives.

I assume this is an oversight/error.

Senario page might warrant a filter to let you select a specific army type (eg Imperial - Ork - Allied) so that players can more quickly select maps of a suitable race (maybe other criteria like turn limit or map size).

Many menus for things like vehicles and infantry display a scrolling bar to the right of the list; however you cannot click and drag on this bar like one normally can. This would be a good feature to add if just to make it easier to go through menus in the game without having to rely on the scrolling wheel alone (senario menu could do with a scrolling bar and this click and drag feature for faster navigation)

Saving menu could do with a blinking line when one clicks on the name bar to enter a name for the save file. Just a visual prompt to allow the person to know that yes they have clicked on it and that yes they can now delete and type a new name if they so wish.

Saving menu - could do with auto-generated descriptive text being made not just for auto saves but regular saves. Detailing the mission name, faction, turn and any other further core details. Helps when making saves and having more than a few on the go at once in being able to pick the right one

Agreed more fantastic lore and mission screens which flesh out the campaign more especially on the Orc side perhaps radio transmissions of them ripping the heads off screaming Imperial guards men and roaring into the radio, "THIS IS WHATS GONNA BE HAPPENINGS TO THE REST OF YOU STINKING HUMIES! HA! HA! HA!" :D

It would also be great to see support for 1280x1024 resolution since I just switched to another monitor due to my 1366x768 resolution monitor bothering my eyes. Guess am getting old or the monitor is starting to go bad in some way that is not totally noticeable. Read a post while googling its in the works but coding for other things is taking precedents. Happy to see though after testing out PANZER CORPS that it already has 1280x1024 resolution implemented and looks visually delicious with the way 1280x makes things larger while bringing out the details at the same time. If only the higher resolutions did the same instead of being a squinting contest :D

Would be great if one of the devs could do an "up coming" or "in the works" list so we could see what ideas they already have nad what might be coming in the weeks/months to come :)

What I missed most in campaign, was some kind of secondary optional objectives on maps. For example rescue of trapped soldiers, raid on abandoned warehouse etc. This could yield extra req or unit before it is officially available (like damaged core baneblade etc). Something that introduces risk vs. reward.

Also I wish all IG models were steel legion...it is really strange that some of the units feature Cadian troopers. I'm no WH40k expert, but even I recognize Cadian armor

Ahh yes secondary mission objectives would be a neat thing to add to the missions. Esp for replay value. Not sure about rewards though, one has to be careful since if you give things, like extra units, you could end up making the next missions too easy (because now you've something much more powerful whilst the map has to be balanced for hte normal player who didn't do the optional objective).

It could be a neat way to unlock new missions though and if they do something with the honour score then simply giving more honour could be a key element since it appears that will be an end/near end game feature

I have bought this game recently myself and enjoyed the ride more than I did Panzer Corps Grand Campaigns. So I can say improvements have been made over that. However, I strongly feel game needs more. I have played well over 10 scenarios and variety of Sentinel walkers is still limited to 2. I'd love to have more variety there: Sentinels with Multi-laser, Rocket Launcher, and Autocannon please.

In tabletop game, Chimera and Razorback are practically infantry fighting vehicles. But as game stands now, Chimera with its decent armament is useless in combat when infantry are dismounted and Razorback and Land Raider don't carry infantry at all. Simple solution would be to make transport units separate entities as they are in Battle Isle series and in Advanced Strategic Command. Would this change be too much to ask? Ork Trukk is open-topped vehicle so passengers can shoot while mounted. Trukk itself has Big Shoota, and if it has Tank Busta mob as passengers... I guess that'd be serious headache for coders to overcome, but I've got simple solution that can be implemented right now: make Trukk & Tank Busta passengers self-contained unit that is armed with 1 Big Shoota and 7 Rokkit Launcha (I got number from miniature model box) and call unit Tank Busta Mechanized or something like it.

Is this going through to developers?
