Early Mycenean

Post by iparker »

I have built up this army and would like to organise it for FoG.

I would appreciate any help anyone can give in constructing an army list. I did not notice any such lists in any of the Beta army lists.

Not done yet so this is personal guestimates for a roughly 12 BG army.....

Charioteers will porbably be superior LCH with light Spear best in BGs of 4. 2 BGs for the army perhaps.

Lots of spearmen in 8s. Probably Protected Average Offensive Spearmen. 5 BGs

Myrmidons porbably as HF in 8s as Sup IF Sw as an ally under Achilles. 2 BG limit.

Some MF Up Average Bowmen - Maybe 2 BGs of 8

LF archers in 6s - 3 BGs

Of course as it hasbn't been developed yet don't hold me to it. Its one of the armies Iam thinking fo painting up hence me having pondered it a little.

Cheers

We've done a bit of work on the earlier lists and I think Simon has remembered the Later Mykenaian bits rather than the early ones.

At present we're thinking about the chariots as Heavy Chariots - the long spears and heavy "Dendra" armour combination looking like a close combat style. The spear men with long spears, figure of eight shields, etc. are probably going to be Defensive Spearmen in order to ensure that the chariotry are the main offensive part of the army.

Defensive spearmen would fit with the infantry. Presumably with LF support as part of the unit, based on the Mycenae lion-hunt dagger.

The chariots are a bit more tricky. They don't fit in with the rules definiton of heavy chariot "Chariots with 3 or 4 crewmen", not do they fit well with the light chariot definition "Chariots with 2 crewmen. Capable of charging or skirmishing.". They don't have missile capability so skirmishing is out.

Hi,

I am very interested in chariot armies. I presume the light chariots will be similar to light cavalry. The heavy chariots, Hittites etc, how much hitting power will they have? There seems a lot of tendency nowadays not to consider them tanks.

My own humble opinion is that in the context of the societies they were in they held the most highly trained men in the army, best weapons, best armour, best training, best everything.

Just wondered they would be rated as fairly powerful close combat troops or whether even heavy chariots are viewed as little more than skirmishing battle taxis??

OOps misread the title and thorught I was dealing with the later one - which is the one I am looking at doing sometime.

Nik has covered the early one a bit I see.

Light cavalry have good shooting and movement capability but poor combat capability (except against other lights). Light chariot have better combat capability than LC but also retain an ability to skirmish and shoot (if the have a missile weapon).

Heavy chariots are, as you'd expect, tougher but can't skirmish.

Achaian or Trojan?

Thanks to you all for these few ideas.

At least it gives me something to roughly base my force on until official lists are available.

Any more thoughts, don't hesitate to post a further reply.

No idea. Osprey have the first 7 books all slated for this year - autumn 2008 for the last 2. After that I assume popularity of the first 7 and the rules will be a major factor.
