Is game better with patches?

Post by ermdog2411 »

I've been on the fence with this game for a long time. I have heard good reviews, bad reviews, and mostly average reviews. I realize they have released a few patches since its release. Does it make the game that much better with the patches? I play pretty much all of these types of 4x games, like Warlock, Civ 4&5, Fallen Enchantress, and Eador, to name a few. Just looking to see if patches really enhanced the game from its original state. Ty

Yes the game has already improved a lot with a steady flow of patches since release version, so some griefs you may have heard from reviews are gone. They are however still points that need to be addressed ( IMO mainly some AI behavior and diplomacy system weakness).

But this doesn't mean actual version of the game is not playable or enjoyable, it's actually already really good (with maybe some game setting to be avoided, such as huge maps ) and if your are in MP the game is a blast as AI and diplo problems are not relevant.

The dev's have so far done an exemplary job with listening to users feedback and working hard to improve things. They just posted on the beta forum a long list of upcoming upgrades, many of them who should deeply improve the game.

To answer your question 'should I buy this ?' my honest answer would be 'Go for it' especially if you are a 4X fan, as the game already brings some refreshing innovation on the genre.

My feeling is it's the most fresh 4X, which are easily complicated.
Here it's some simple while keeping interesting, I hope the renewed feature of patches won't make the game too much complicated.

In most gaming forums, the fans ask for and propose improvements and all we hear is the crickets chirping. On this forum, that is not the case! Proxy Studios has a simple budget and few staff, but they are amazingly good at responding to feedback on the forums, implementing fan ideas, and more. So I say you should go for it. The first game you play, pick standard settings (medium planet size, medium alien aggression, ect ect) and then when you get ideas to improve the game, just start up a discussion here. Everyone has been pretty chill so far.

The reason I say to start your first game on standard settings is because we've seen some new players come on here with misconceptions about game mechanics because they refused to play anything other than extreme settings. Disclaimer: I like some of the extreme settings, but you need to understand the standard game-play before being able to "spar" with us here (many of us have been playing games on all different settings since the beta).

And yes, there remains a list of things that need improvement, but a lot has been fixed already and it seems that the devs have their priorities straight about what order to fix certain issues. So to answer your question: yes, the game is better. We also know that there are a lot of new features that they have in mind. Some of the features that we'll see soon have been announced. Proxy has kept a few cards close to the chest on other things (understandably).
