Moving On

Post by jokerrr88 »

I don't even play the game anymore because its HURRY HURRY HURRY HURRY its actually boring now, you get no time to enjoy anything its like a foot race and then rinse repeat for the next map. I bought the new DLC's and have played 2 scenarios and thought hell this is just the samething over and over and over again. I'm not trying to bash the game I just honestly got bored with it, and I think I know why, its the campaign set up. I never have been a fan of linked scenario's they grow boring after the first time playing them.

IMO I have always thought that Total War series had the right idea, Turn Based Large Operation Map -> Timed Battle Map (leave out the RTS and keep IGOUGO Format). You add that feature where I'm moving my Corps around a Operation Map where at 1 Part of the Map I might have a small force defending multiple cities and the mentality of you fight with what you brought and no prestige points to buy stuff, and this game goes off the charts on the fun factor but for me right now, sorry just to repetitive.

Now I will say the Slitherine team has what alot of other big companies don't have with there customers IMO and thats communication, I might not agree with some of it but still think thats what will make them a successful company and will in the end push them higher up the charts when it comes to succesful games they produced. I'll check back and keep my game up to date (patch wise not DLC wise) but just honestly have grown bored of game but keep up the good work!!

Sorry to hear that, jokerr88. Have you tried multi-player games? There is so much variety in how human players do things that it's very hard to get bored. LMK if you'd like a game.

Mabye the only "Hurry Hurry" I feel is due to the turn limit. You can adjust this via the official cheat code if you wish. It's

turns #N
Adds #N to scenario turn count. Can be negative.
Complete cheat list is here: http://slitherine.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=25990

Have a look at the D:C campaigns. The victory conditions are very different and probably what you are looking for.

I guess, any game becomes boring eventually. ;) One question though. Does it really feel like "hurry hurry hurry hurry" all the time to you? I thought, in most scenarios the turn limit is generous, it is there only because there MUST be some time limit, otherwise, this becomes a game where only one result is possible (victory), and this should be much more boring than what we have.

Jokerrr88, by changing the difficulty level in the original campaigns you also change the turn limits. I don't know what level you're playing at, but have you tried toning it down a bit?

I can see where you're coming from.
I wish there were more desperate defense scenarios or scenarios on the base of "make the best of the situation within 20 turns"
That's being said, it's up to you what you make out of the game.

If your objective is "winning", then use all tricks, do "save" and "reload" etc
For me with that type of "winning", I lose "fun" at the same time.
Just an example: I do not go for decisive victories wherever this forces me to invade the US - that would be "winning" in terms of the game, but "losing" in terms me having fun.

You know, it's funny you should mention that. Piatek scenario from DLC 1939 actually has exactly 20 turns, and it's a desperate defensive scenario (at least on Manstein difficulty it certainly is).

Taken from deducter's AAR of DLC Grand Campaign 1939:

Mission 4: Piatek

I requested an additional Bf109 and a standard pioneer from High Command. I deploy near each bridge with close terrain an infantry, a AT, and an ART unit. I do not actually attempt to hold most of these bridges. I also have a PzI and P(t)38 to help shore up defenses where needed.

First the Polish launch several strong attacks in the central area. Stuka bombings and Bf109 strafings of Polish units attempting to cross the river inflict high casualties. This is followed by an artillery barrage and an infantry attack, and the Polish unit is destroyed or forced to retreat.

Their initial thrust having failed, the Poles mass up a huge force in the east, near Ozorkow. Their infantry approach the city from the north and west, but they do not attempt to actually attack for the most part. An extended spell of rain resulted in muddy conditions for several hours, helping to slow advancing Polish forces, but also hindering defensive efforts.

Muddy terrain hampers operations.

A second artillery brigade was diverted to the area to help defend, and heavy bombardment in addition to assaults forced some Polish units to surrender. Still, so numerous was the Polish army that the defenders came close to running out of ammunition, and was even forced to evacuate the city temporarily, although fortunately a mountaineer unit could be transferred over to hold the line.

Stukas in conjunction with the 88 PaK destroying Polish armor.

But even as the crisis grew worse in the east, the Poles launch a massive attack in the west, and there are precious few units in the area to defend. A P(t)38 and the 88 was rushed to the area, while the remaining units did their best to defend, even falling back from Lowicz as necessary. The front was thinly held until the 88 arrived, and the Polish tanks gradually destroyed.

Polish forces continue their assault in the east, forcing German forces to pull back temporarily.

Just as the attacks were beaten back in the west and the east, another Polish force charged at the central bridgeheads again. An intense battle broke out, and German forces struggled to push the Polish units, including a 20 strength cavalry brigade, back across the bridgeheads. However, the bridges only need to be held on the last turn, not any beforehand. Hence, German units positioned themselves in reach of every bridge and launched a concerted attack, taking back all objectives at the last moment and securing complete victory.

I see what you mean about hurry hurry hurry. But you have to remember that PzC is a game about blitzkrieg. That's why your core units are tied to prestige, and prestige is tied to how quickly you succeed.

There is no time for amassing land for production and resources and therefore nothing really to defend over the length of a campaign.

There are games designed around amassing cities, land, resources and production which I agree are awesome to play because there are some awesome defensive struggles, but PzC just isn't that kind of game.

Like Kerensky said, the best PzC has are some defensive scenarios.

A lack of motivation after the full campaign and two DLCs and beta testing is quite understandable, take a break.
Most of my buddies play Skyrim and BF3 at the moment, so maybe you need a different genre of game for a while!

I am rather used to this kind of threads from MMOs, don't worry, you will come back. There will be 42,43,44,45 and god knows what else DLCs and maybe Africa, the Pacific and maybe even an "IRON SKY" campaign. :)

Hurry, hurry, hurry?

Have you played the original Panzer General series? If not, you don´t really know what "hurry" means. :D

One of the things i enjoyed first on PC is that, although there´s a time limit, it is more flexible than PG and gives you some time to develop your tactics instead of a mad rush everytime because you are not going to reach the last objetive and lose the scenario.

The Russians in Allied General were in every scenario they were attacking notoriously short on turns.
It was explained with political commissars influencing the strategy of High Command. :)

The rush to Berlin was to be taken literal. :(
