FOG Culture Change

Post by hoodlum »

The FoG authors, therefore, have decided not to try and cover all these cases and attempt to bring a culture change - IMO this has, to a degree, worked and is laudable. They are also quite candid, if you actually talk to them nicely, that it isn't perfect - you will have seen that Richard has said they are working on possible updates already, however, I know this will not include increasing the legalese in the rules, which I applaud.[/quote]

Nik wrote this on another topic and It would be great if there could be some discussion on this.

Unfortunately, I live a long way from the Authors so will probably never get to hear there thoughts on how the game is meant to be played.

My reasons for asking this are two fold - first I am going to be umpiring a small local comp later this year so it would be good to be include the culture statement in the briefing and to keep it in mind in making rulings. Context and overall purpose adds a lot to interpretation.

Second, I have come to the realisation that some of the issues I have had with the rules are really with the way people are approaching the game. In optimising lists - rom dom swarms, Skirmish swarms, milimetre by milimetre measuring, avoiding combat, buttocks of death by a milimeter of a corner of poor lf against superior knights. I would also admit that I have also been guilty of this in the past but this is part and parcel of the arms race.

Hi Hoodlam

What would you like to hear fromt he authors on this topic?

Perhaps pose a bunch of questions. FWIW I am happy to answer my personal view as 1/3rd of the team.

Well, the game is played a good time now and of course weaknesses in the rules were revealed by now and surely some exploitations, too.
That's the fate of all games played a certain time especially when tournament-heavy. It can be easily "repaired" or improved, though.
So my question to Simon is: Can we hope for some serious rule changes or updates in the near future, say until the end of next year perhaps?

There is a sticky thread at the top of this section on additions to the FAQs Si - when you guys get a chance it would be good to get answers on those please?

Have put my view on a couple of FAQ questions and will try to get to others.

As someone has said, any ruleset has a few gamey bits appear as people find little twists over time. We set out to reward good generalship rather than rulemongering and in general it feels we do. Likewise getting the feel right of different armies in general.

We are starting to mull over initial ideas for future adaptations but its early days. So rest assured we are observing, listening and engaging brain. For my part, I am starting to track the forum again more fully. So keep comments and discussions going as it will all feed into the mix. All much appreciated thanks. :)

I am sure when the time is right JD will let everyone know about any plans going forward.

Something about common sense and rejecting historically silly interpretations in spots unclear in the rules would be nice.
