how to use midget submarines

Post by FrancoisPhilidor »

Hi,

just a question, because I have never played Japan in singleplayer.
I have put my midget submarine into the bigger submarine, but now I can't get it out for some reason. There is no deployment hex, as it normally happens with planes on carriers etc.

Also one of the icons on the midget sub is just a white square (doesn't display properly).

Anybody experience with midget subs? Are they bugged or sth?

Thanks

I have never used midget subs as cargo, but could it be something simple as the carrier needing to be surfaced?

Thanks, but I have tried both, on the surface and under the surface. It really seems broken since the last update or sth. If it ever worked in the past. I have never played Japan in singleplayer, so no idea :-D

Does a large submarine have the "Cargo" trait?

well they definitely have cargo space. I could load them but not unload them

Maybe you should do it through a script in the editor?
The first condition is that you have to bring a large submarine to an enemy port or naval base. When this condition is met, the mini submarine can be launched. The method is not very comfortable, so-so.

Nonono, that wouldn't make sense. You are definitely supposed to be able to launch them anywhere in the ocean; not just in port

Never worked. Yeah, you could load them, but not unload them.

Off topic: Ever tried the "tunneling" effect with the Japanese infantry units? The mechanic works, but to my knowledge nobody ever implemented it in their maps. Custom or "official".

I have placed tunnels in scenarios, but mostly for decoration. Does the AI use tunnels?

I do not think the AI is sufficiently developed to take such initiatives on its own.

Maybe by doing a script to force the AI to take the tunnel ?

Never used them either, so I can't help with that. Back then Lukas made the original Pac cam.

One idea could be to spawn Japanese units nearby regularly, until the player achieves some goal to stop it.

On your Attu map there are tunnels. Have you put them anywhere else too? Iwo Jima?
It's really an under-used mechanic, like many others

It has been ages since I did any work on the Pacific scenarios. I simply don't remember...

I get that the "tunneling" effect is just a shortcut for units basically, but I seriously thought that some (custom) scenarios would/could use it for some "creative" secondary objectives at least.
