Early SM Fortress Spam

Hi everyone,
I recently played a 2v2 in Gladius against two SMs. They managed to ping me in the third round and placed their small fortress next to me (within firing range). By the time I was able to destroy both of them, they were able to place two more, which ended with me being defeated. Do you know a way to fend off the fortresses? Does this happen more often in online battles? Before that, I had only ever played against AI.
