Field of Glory: Kingdoms?

Post by Alcoolamus »

It is known the devs are working on a new FOG:E game based on the same engine with a different era. With the announcement of FOG2: Medieval, it seems quite obvious to me it will be set in the Middle Ages too, to allow exported battles in FOG2: Medieval.

If this is true, it's awesome! Instant buy for me :oops:

What do you think?

It is a just case, but considering that field of glory 2 medieval excludes the half known world ( muslim world, eastern roman empire, Africa) it will be a vast reduction of the scope that field of glory empires allready offers . It is a case nevertheless.

I'm very confident the game will get DLCs covering these areas and later periods like the Hundred Years War :wink:

I’m eagerly waiting for what has been hinted to us for quite some time already. Now some pure speculations. :D At the beginning FOG2: Medieval is going to be quite limited in its scope (11th-13th century North and Central Europe only ). There are, therefore, a few possible options here for the new Empires game:

a) We are going to get a whole medieval game with a map similar to the Empires game at the very beginning, but we are not going to be able to export battles for the first year or more (i.e. until FOG2: Medieval gets enough DLC’s). One of the main selling points of Empires is possibility to export battles, so that would be a tough decision to make;

b) We are not going to see a new Empires games for quite some time, in the meantime DLC’s for FOG2: Medieval will expend that game. I don’t think that is the case – it would take too long to fully expend FOG2: Medieval, in order for the new Empires game to have a map of similar size and scope of the first Empires game;

c) We are going to have a limited scope Empires game, with possible new DLC’s extending this game. The new Empires game would be more focused on a regional warfare, with a few turns per year (we know that FOG2: Medieval is going to have seasons, which helps). That could also be good for gameplay, as there was less map painting in the medieval Europe than in ancient Roman and Persian periods. Therefore, smaller scenarios focused on local conflicts could be more plausible. That would also be a tough decision to make, as we all love huge sandbox feeling of the first game, which is similar to the scope of total war and paradox games (Europe, North Africa, the Middle East covered by one map).

Looking forward to the new game.

"we are not going to be able to export battles for the first year or more (i.e. until FOG2: Medieval gets enough DLC’s)" hardly, since ageods dint connect the empires Persia dlc with the similar field of glory 2 dlc. They clearly want the interaction between games to be only between base field of glory 2 .

The limited scope seems more possible, a scenario that I personally dont hope for.

My guess is they can focus on a smaller campaign map spanning from Iberia to Russia and Scotland to Italy, to accommodate the factions present in base FOG2M (something similar to the Pyrrhus campaign in FOGE). Once DLCs are released they can expand the map in the middle east and Africa

Btw I don't think the new FOGE game will be released any time soon and I think DLCs would prob have been released for FOG2M by then

All of this is pure speculation of course :)

Edit: a smaller scaled map would mean a more detailed map btw, with more provinces. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing

Pocus is french. There has never been a proper PC game of the 100 years war. The participiants of the war (and/or their allies) would nicely also be from pretty much the same area as the area from where the armies for FoG2:Medieval have been announced to come from. The scope would be excellent for a game using the FOGE system, not to mention the decission, the missions, etc. Yeah, I am going to bet for "Field of Glory: A Hundred Years War".

The time period FOG2M covers doesn't include the HYW, it probably will be a DLC

That is true, what I meant, however, is that FoG2 already had the needed “Persian” DLC by that time. You simply didn't have to buy it in order to get access to the content (export battles using that DLC). Just like you didn’t have to buy DLCs in order to use late Roman units (yet, the content was part of other DLC).

When FOG2 was first released, they were putting out DLCs every 3 months or so. We might see that again considering the timeframe since the last DLC. If so, it seems likely a new Medieval FOGE would cover both east and west. Keeping fingers crossed.

i hope for some operational wargaming - clasic Ageod style - with monthly turns and map size from Wars of Succesion or Wars of Napoleon.

With games covering shorter timer period - blending it with economy and diplomacy from Empires engine

@Swuul There have been a few HYW games FYI Montjoie! (http://www.montjoiegame.com/en_downloads.php) and Great Battles Medieval to name two. Has anyone done a super in depth study level digital wargame of the conflict no not yet.

Also not a slitherine game and a rather wonky title that got a mixed reception when it was released but is fun if you want to go on a Joan of Arc hack and slash.....frenzy is Wars and Warriors: Joan of Arc. Not going to pretend that it is at all a historically accurate game but La Hire shouting "Taste my foot!" while smashing mobs of kettle helmed English dudes and consuming vast quantities of French bread (yes bread heals you for some strange reason) is hilarious. Basically the combat is like an odd precursor to Rise and Fall of Civilizations at War or if dynasty warriors went full cheesy HYW with an abysmal RTS layer.

See: https://youtu.be/rmym_SVjQ-U?t=122

Surprisingly it does follow some of the major events in Joan's life reasonably well. It is a once completely mindless and silly and sort of impressively ambitious yet infuriating with next to non-existent AI and very linear map design on most of the levels but something about it is charming.

But, as others have pointed out the base timeframe of FoG2:Medieval doesn't cover the HYW but expansions likely will given that the stated goal is to have FoG2 games cover from 2500BCE-1500CE

I think a FoG:E style medieval game would be a lot of fun. However, some more focused scenarios on specific conflicts would distinguish it from something like CK3 that takes a more sandbox approach. Obviously HYW and the Crusades are likely where a lot of people's interests lie.

But, I'm glad to see that FoG2: Medieval is going to do some lesser known battles along with a few of the more popularly known ones.

Given how long it has been since the last FOG2 DLC, I wonder if they are not already well-advanced on a few DLCs for FOG2M, to be releasee at the same time or shortly after the base game. So they wouldn't necessarily need to have a smaller map for FOG2M, just fewer nations exportable to FOG2M.

I think it seems probable that we will see a new Field of glory :Medieval Empires/Kingdoms, which for me is an instant buy. :D

My only hope is that there will be playable sieges (its not that hard to implement) and whats more important once the battle is exported to FoG2:Med there wont be any upscaling or downscaling of units as this really sucks, I want to see exactly the same kind and number of units once the battle is exported (fingers crossed).
