the manual hardly explains anything

Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun is a turn-based tactical and strategic game set during this turbulent time; primarily focusing on the Japanese Warring States period and Japanese Invasion of Korea. Other armies from East Asia are also made available to simulate different conflicts across the region.

the manual hardly explains anything

Post by Vik »

Hi , I have some questions

- How we know what units are light or heavy? for charge or attack in forest.
- What are the differences between heavy weapons and swords, or spears?

I think the game explains very bad all the important concepts, and left the player throwing units to the enemy, that he doesnt know if a weapon is more effective than other .. or Why some unit cant charge another, or why lose cohesion when enter some terrain and other doesnt.

I think the manual explains these things pretty straightforwardly, but in any case -

1) If you mouse over a unit, its unit description will indicate its type, such as 'Light Foot' or 'Light Horse.' Any other unit category than those two is Non-Light.
2) Pages 56-57 of the manual break it all down. But I suppose I can write it out here as well -

Heavy Weapon
100POA on Impact with Infantry (0 with cavalry)
100POA in melee
Ignores enemy unit armor superiority

Swordsmen
No Impact capability
100 melee POA EXCEPT against Steady (not Disrupted or Disordered) Spearmen, in which case 0POA

Spearmen
100POA on Impact unless charging Lancers
100POA in melee
Cancels out enemy Swordsmen POA unless Disrupted or Disordered

As to Disorder, Forests Moderately Disorder all troops except Light Infantry, which are unaffected, and Spearmen and Cavalry, which are Severely Disordered.

As to charging see the Priority Charge and Zone of Control sections of the manual. In addition, Medium Foot cannot charge non-light cavalry, though melee weapon equipped Warriors can.

3) Really though, you don't need to know all of this stuff by heart to start getting into the game. Just turn on Detailed ToolTips in options, and, if you like Combat Reports, set those to Detailed as well. This will give you all of the under the hood info. In addition, you can CTRL+Click on any unit to get a breakdown of its capabilities.

Vik, this is not an easy game to master, I find that one of the best ways to get to grips with the complex gameplay is to watch good players in action. Have you checked out SnuggleBunnies’ YouTube channel yet? He offers excellent advice covering force selection, using the terrain, and manoeuvring, with tactical analysis of his play and that of his opponent.

If you like Sengoku Jidai, you may well also enjoy Pike & Shot, which is based on the same STUB game engine. P&S is also well covered on SnuggleBunnies’ channel. I am still learning new aspects of these games with each viewing.
