After concerns about the lack of air support earlier, Wagner managed to arrange for some mobile airfields teams. They had a slightly easier job this time, as the desert was practically a ready airfield and required less preparation to create a temporary air strip. It was plane maintenance with all the sand and dirt that was a real issue. This air support was desperately needed, as the aim of the current operation was to sink the Caspian Sea fleet. If not done, these ships would allow the enemy to keep supply lines to the Caucasus, and thus endanger Axis presence in the area even after securing it. It was already difficult to defend such a wide and vulnerable front line covering the pipeline routes, so Bertorelli knew he had to turn this battle into a success. Fortunately intelligence reports suggested that the flotilla was not yet evacuated from the main port of Astrakhan. It remained there since the Soviets were certain that swamps in the vicinity were a perfect defensive line, impossible to quickly breach. The commander planed to prove the enemy otherwise and meant to smash through these positions and take the port by surprise.
Starting Prestige (after purchases and replacements): 26740
New Units Commissioned:
2. Rohamtüzér Osztály - HU - StuG IIIG
A new StuG unit was formed in the Hungarian army. The crews lacked experience, but having access to reliable StuG IIIG, it would be a shame not to put them to use if the situation ever demands it.
New Equipment Provided:
1 Tankov Batal’on - BG - Panzer IVH
1. Rohamtüzér Osztály - HU - Hetzer
1. Páncéltörő Zászlóalj - HU - OS11 - 7.5 cm Pak 40 (SdKfz 11)
1º Gruppo Bombardiere Sq 3 - IT - Hs 129
Bulgarians now finally also received the Panzer IVH. However, due to overall tank shortages they were still not able to fully retire the Renault R35. Hungarian army received the 7.5cm AT guns. On the offense they would not be too useful, but who knows if the Axis army was going to be able to keep up the pace. A much more interesting new piece of kit was the tiny, yet efficient Hetzer, utilizing a lot of parts and production line for the Panzer 38(t), still present in Prague factories. Italian forces on the Eastern Front got their first Hs 129 supplied from Germany. These somewhat underwhelming planes had immense firepower, and properly used made a difference against Soviet tanks, as general Bertorelli had a chance to prove many times.

Highlights

With camouflaged Hetzers in wait, the northern counterattack stops before it even seriously begun.

The city of Utta and its vicinity are full of elite Soviet forces. Apparently these are the very last reserves with actual combat experience in the area and they were all put in this very defensible location.

Unfortunately for the enemy, these tough units are also in range of Axis bombers, who clear the way for the ground troops to advance.

Once Utta is secured, the general sends his forces down three main paths through the marshlands. Intense fighting ensues in these cramped conditions, but the field airfields teams manage to secure air strips that the planes can then use and sink the majority of the Caspian flotilla, not sparing even the smallest of vessels.

By the time first units reach the banks of Caspian Sea, the Soviet resistance is broken, and the few infantry battalions quickly fall under overwhelming odds.

The same swamps that offered great defensive value, now become a deadly trap for the remaining enemy forces.
Summary:
Final Prestige: 27620 (up 880)
Overall:
With the sinking of the Caspian flotilla and securing Caucasus, general Bertorelli received multiple congratulations from his fellow commanders. This was a great success, that not only provide indispensable supplies, but also was one of the few positive news arriving from various areas in Europe. Down in Italy, the Allies not only invaded Sicily, but also moved in to attack the mainland of the country, forcing the Germans to send even more divisions to assist the Italian army, who was no dealing well with the defense. Mannstein's distraction operation, while successful in its goals, was very costly in terms of men and equipment, and the Soviets managed to even push back further north. With winter slowly approaching it was clear the conflict is once again far form being resolved, but at least the situation was not yet critical. The Axis war machine, while having to deal with more and more threats from multiple angles, at least now had the resources to keep it operational.
