When Willie Dee almost killed FDR

Post by bru888 »

Every once in a while, I come across some history that makes me say "How have I never heard of this story?"

This is one of those instances: That One Time The US Navy Torpedoed FDR

I thought it might have been embellished a bit but the account in the article matches Wikipedia. Unbelievable.

Oh man, you could never, ever, live that down. "Hey, remember that time you almost torpedoed the president?"

According to Wikipedia, for the rest of the war (that is, until she was sunk by kamikaze in June 1945 but with no fatalities), ships would greet the Willie Dee with shouts of "Don't shoot! We're Republicans!" :)
