Pod B round 2 - East
oscarius Achaemenid Persian 480-461 BC beat Stew101: Numidian or Moorish 55 BC - 6 AD w/Roman Allies: 50 to 19%
91 points
Persian firepower plus a major cavalry encirclement proved too much for my foe. Looking forward to the next one.

Re: LOEG Early Classical Antiquity Division A - Results
East Pod A
Holien Carthaginian (Hannibal in Africa) 202 BC w/Numidian or Moorish 341-56 BC allies (21%) 93 pts Defeats pantherboy Achaemenid Persian 480-461 BC (54%) 21 pts
The map in some ways favoured Carthage with a big hill / wide plateau in the middle on which they started and the Persians could not easily advance upon. The Persian main infantry line withdrew back to a range of small hills with one securely anchored against a sizable wooded area on the right flank of Hannibal. Hannibal had chosen wisely what forces to bring and had as long a line of infantry as the Persian force. In the advance to contact the Bows of the Persians were painful but not terminal to the advancing Carthage forces. Ultimately the battle was decided on the two flanks as both were lost to the Persian meagre cavalry force after many tough turns of move and counter move. Several units of Persian Cavalry choose to flee off the edge rather than fight. This allowed the Carthage Cavalry on the right flank to get behind the hill position being defended by the immortals. The Persian cavalry did surprise Hannibal by returning both at the same time on both flanks, but by that stage the losses in the centre were too great.
Thanks to Steve for running this mini tourney and his insight during the game. I can see how some force selections are not going to do well against others. Still lots to learn about this game system....

Pod B
Morat (Spartans/Romans) (17% losses) beat Blagrot (Phyrric) (44% losses): Points: Morat 87, Blagrot 17.
Tough fight over a low hill. Spartan phalanxes and spears did a lot of damage, and the Roman allies just kept popping up in the right place to hold the line. On another day, with even a touch more luck their foes might well have prevailed.
Thanks to Blagrot for the match, played as ever in a great spirit.

East C
Aetius (Seleucids) defeats Kroche (Carthaginians) 61-38
There was a large rough hill on the right and open space in the middle. The Seleucids moved their heavy units forward while the mediums went to try and control the hill. The Carthaginians did a great job of wresting the hill from them at a pretty high cost to the Seleucids, but the middle line melee with the heavies was the decisive factor; Greek and African heavy infantry couldn't hold the pikes and Romans back long enough. GG was fun!

Aetius39 (Seleucids) defeats kronenblatt (Persians) 50-25
Water constricted the map a bit, and both armies went toward a hill on the edge of the impassable water. Arrows came down but luckily the damage was not enough to stop the Pikes and Romans from eventually routing the mostly medium foot army. GG as always!
