I've played Panzer Corps, Order of Battle and Hearts of Iron IV [mostly with Total War mod]. They all have, to different degrees, an expected learning curve. Been craving something different, so after some searching around, I decided that it appears "War in the East" may be the definitive game on the German/Russian theater of the war. Surely, I can figure it out.
So, I shelled out the rather large payment for the game, So far, I have been able to sit and stare at the opening campaign screen. I have absolutely no clue.
Now what? Can anyone point me to "the best, yet simple & clear," guide to learning how to get started with this game?
How does one even begin to learn how to play "Gary Grigsby's War in the East"?

The Matrix forum has a very good collection of posts on this game - they are the original publisher. There is a newbie's guide and quite a few people who can help you.

i just started reading the official 382 pages manual, made it to page 65 so far. indeed that requires quite a determination. if i wasnt a bit bored with Panzer Corps (not mentioning anything else) i probably wouldnt bother. guess if i can maintain this mood and real life dont disturb me all that much i can finish the manual in couple more weeks

Re: How does one even begin to learn how to play "Gary Grigsby's War in the East"?
Greetings. I am an avid ASL player and live in a remote area. VASSAL is an option but my work schedule precludes playing with anyone (railroad hours). Is this game similar to Third Reich or other grand strategy? I am happy to read the manual and watch the videos on how to learn how to play. Any suggestions on where to start?

i was on the beta, same as WITW and tbh i still haven't read the manual, one day i may, but so far i just learn by watching others play, and playing, or testing stuff myself, the manual is great and really is a work of art, but saying that, i just don't like manuals and like the jump in and play approach and only look for something or watch a video on something when im stuck or not 100% sure of what im doing.
i'll now break it down to it's simpliest parts,
its a hex based game like any other, just on a epic scale, nothing more nothing less.
it's a war game like any other, just on a larger map and scale.
it has counters, just like most war games and can be of 2 types, normal or nato, so nothing different or new there either, just more of them than i'd guess any other game, unsure on that one but also depends on what mission / campaign your playing also.
the manual has more pages than any other manual i'd guess in any other game to date, but tbh it also has more quick reference guides also in pages than most have normal in pages, so like all above just on a vast larger and more epic scale.
the game scales well, as i'm not a great gamer, much better at testing than playing, but on easy i can do very well in WITE1 and 2 and in WITW, on higher levels of difficulty i'm not so good and no where near good enough to play with anyone else, as most online players read manuals and know how the game really works, but does that stop me from enjoying it? hell no
i tested WITE2 for over 2k hours, same for WITW tbh and did like that front better and also found it somewhat easier to learn which is why i also tell those who want to go from normal basic war gaming to something less epic to start off with before going fully into WITE 1 or 2, as the scale just increases as does the amount of time needed to do one turn etc, if don't correctly and on anything other than easy which i play on lol

Hi! Just registered here and trying to figure out "Gary Grigsby’s War in the East" myself. I'd recommend starting with videos on YouTube, especially from Strategy Gaming Dojo. They’re super helpful for beginners like us.
If you prefer reading, the manual is thorough—though intimidating at first. Take it step by step, and it gets manageable!
