Ottoman team event : debrief

Post by ahuyton »

Before we move on with further events, I would like your views on the Ottoman event.

- What worked well and what did not?
- What could be done better in a future event?

I have posted a thread with a suggestion for a next outing, but so far response has been, shall we say, muted. Maybe we take a break for a month or two and let people finish their other games, I know that many are playing in FoG2 and FoG2-Medieval tournaments and leagues, which is probably keeping them busy.

Alan,

I think it worked well, the last battle was a little unbalanced in favour of the Ottomans but it was still fun to try to overcome that.

Possibly the replies are muted because most guys are quite happy to play anything you come up with, I know I am.

If you wish to delay starting the next one then that is your decision and I will support that, if you want to start soon I will happily play.

I totally agree with Andre.

Thanks so much Alan for all your efforts in putting this together and keeping it flowing, mending the holes when players disappear and giving assistance to Andre & myself.
These 'Events' are without the cut & thrust of the very serious competitions elsewhere and have been a great exercise for those of us who do not play a great variety of the DLC's and Community Scenarios. For instance I have not played Mohacs and St Gotthard for 5 years prior to this Event ( I have won an MP game of St Gottard as the Imperialist, it can be done )
The one game per month is perfect imo.
I do like having these Events work through a timeline ie Mohacs to St Gotthard with MP games dated to fall in between those dates.
I think that the historical themes that we have in these Events adds greatly to their popularity Alan.
Once again, many Thanks Alan

Alan,

A look back through the Tournaments & Leagues sections of the P&S and SJ forums shows just how much you effort you have expended to build a sense of community. Thank you. I tend not to comment on the specific content of the proposed events, as you put so much careful thought into creating a balanced and interesting set of games, and my views are inevitably less well thought through. I look to the more knowledgeable members of the community, such as Brian, Andre and Jack to do that. I only know that I will participate in whatever the group eventually decides upon.

These team events have introduced me to a group of experienced players with whom I have come to enjoy playing very much. The group has benefited from the recent addition of FoGII luminaries Nosy_Rat and popeytheflatulent, possibly as a result of the high quality coverage showcased on SnuggleBunnies’ YouTube channel. My hope is that more of the names that we regularly see hosting games in the multiplayer lobbies, will also be tempted to join in, helping to keep these excellent and rewarding games alive. However, I am aware that the more people who participate, the more work arranging games, and cajoling players to finish on time, will fall to you.

My personal preference tends toward the skirmish game, although a sprinkling of historical battles can strengthen the theme, and add to the mix. And the team format means that the occasional unbalanced game is acceptable, as long as it is not always the same team that is disadvantaged; overall, the Ottoman armies performed very much better that I expected in the most recent event. I would also be perfectly happy with a team competition in which players take part in pairs of pseudo mirror matches, with the outcome decided by the cumulative team scores, although I realise that this departs somewhat from the historical themed nature of the events so far.

I hope that you will be encouraged to continue with your efforts, even if it may seem to be an uphill struggle on occasion.

Thanks again Alan. Honestly I'm happy to play whatever you put on, as the one game/month timeline keeps things easy going.

I really enjoyed the use of community created historical scenarios, made most of the matchups feel "real" as opposed to an FOG2 Digital League game. I know balance is an issue in some scenarios but with the size of the library, I think there is potential to incorporate those community scenarios in any era.

Hi Alan, happy to play anything. Not played a lot of Pike and Shot or the Japanese game I can't spell. Watching Snuggle Bunnies You Tube channel certainly peaked my interest and really looking forward to future battles.

Best wishes

For me that was very nice tournament. Mix of scenarios and standard battles is very interesting. I dont see any things that can be bettter at this moment.

I had already posted this in the main 'Ottoman' thread before seeing this one so I hope it's ok to simply copy it here too..

Alan,

It was definitely fun , thanks for running it. Although a couple of the games were a little 'uneven' I still enjoyed the challenges they set. I don't believe these events are all about the winning to be honest. I' m sure we Imperialists found glory in our brave defeats and especially in some unlikely wins!☺
