Dark Ages Cavalry (in 15mm)

Post by Polkovnik »

Having just received Wolves from the Sea yesterday I realise I am am going to need some cavalry for my Anglo-Saxons / Vikings / Anglo-Danish.
Which manufacturers have cavalry that would work for these armies ?

Essex

I have found some Essex mounted Vikings that work.

Poses in heavy armour and dressed in light with shields in the air. They also have a great mounted leader with captives I am using for my commander.

Although some of the old glory stuff is good the older ranges are pretty bad in my opionion. I'd stick with essex if I were you. Limited poses but lots of ranges. I ended up mixing mounted vikings, slav alan, saxon adn bulgarians for my sundryu undrilled dark age cavalry.

You could try 50 paces as well. Thiers mix well with essex.

Old Glory is no good to me anyway as I'm in the UK. I'll look at the Essex ones. The mounted leader sounds good.
50 Paces I've not heard of. Are they available in the UK ?

I'd looked at Essex previously but couldn't see any Vikings. Now I've found them - they have a Dark Ages section but the Vikings, Saxons etc are listed under Ancients !

I am also in the Uk and have no problem ordering Old Glory 15s particularly as they have a great sale on at the moment. I ordered $100 of figures got a 30% discount and they arrived within one week. Better service than many UK companies.

50 paces is the company - minature wars is the make I think

Have used them to bulk out my Byzantines for conscripted troops still in non standard armour.

No probs with orders from Canada to Australia but there may be a local supplier.

Splintered Light has a Romano-British range which has some nice cavalry in it.

Old Glory are $1 per mounted figure, which is about 70p. Most mounted are around 50p a figure in the UK, so Old Glory are rather expensive. They'd be more reasonable with 30% off, but I don't see any mention of this on the website.
