Panzers too slow in blitzkrieg

Post by RuiMArques »

Hello,

In the Belgium scenario in the Blitzkrieg campaign the Panzers going to the Ardennes forest are utterly slow. While going through roads in forest hexes they move very little. I can't get a panzer in 2 turns to get Luxembourg. I have a 232 armoured car which has move 10(!) and only moves 2 tiles in forest road tiles.
The infantry (even on trucks) moves much faster.
I've seen a video on this scenario (by paradogs gamer) where panzers move much faster.
I would think that on roads, even in the forest, panzers would move much faster
This is version 5.2.3.

not really a tech support question, as it's a opinion and more for the developers tbh, will leave it here so they can see it and reply if they wish to explain there choices and opinions on what's used in game etc

The only way to capture Luxembourg in two turns now, is to use a unit with a speed of six, or a slower one with transport. Panzers will not make it in time.

Remember in 1940, when German infantry poured through the Ardennes, and they advanced so quickly that once they were through, they had to stop and wait for the tanks to catch up?

And I thought the SdKfz 232 is a scout/recon unit...

The movement (and climate) system of OOB has its flaws compared to the one of Panzer Corps but you still play and tweak it a bit.
Roads through dense forests or mountains seems unthinkable for the devs. Both road types (dirty & paved) should offer high speed on any dry, flat terrain type and only differ on wet/muddy and snowy climate condition; dirty roads slightly less ofc. Only hills and mountains terrain types should reduce the road speed besides climate. I think that is something what most people expect in a game.
Currently, moving on roads through simple forests or jungles give the impression that fallen trees are littered everywhere on roads. Not really that plausible in my book. See Panzer Corps where it works better.
One thing that I very liked in the movement.pzdat file of PC is that you can even use decimal values for movement costs that help a lot to fine-tune the speeds. Even the PC devs didn’t really use decimals often for unknown reasons. That could make such unusually-looking high movement numbers of infantry and now wheeled units pretty much obsolete.

Thanks to all the answers! They were quite instructive.
I can't capture Luxembourg with the armoured car because it has the "fleeting presence" attribute and can't be used to capture ground.
I can do it with infantry.
The only thing that still bugs me is why is the armoured car slower than tanks in the forest roads.

Cheers!
