Hunting down units

Post by HobbesACW »

Hi folks, I just lost my first OOB campaign. I failed to kill enough Soviet units in the Blitzkrieg campaign. I didn't find enough Soviet units to kill in time. I'm actually quite happy that I lost as I won the other OOB games that I have played fairly easily so it is quite nice to waken from the complacency and realise it is actually possible to lose. But I have never enjoyed a game where you have to hunt units down on the map in order to win. Do the new Burma and Panzerkrieg games have similar victory conditions? I'd much rather fail if I don't obtain an objective rather than map hunting to find a unit to kill. Also I'm finding the purely land based scenarios a bit samey. Missing the sea element. It would be nice to get a Med campaign - not just the desert.

I can safely say that there are none of those "body count" objectives in either Burma Road or Panzerkrieg. There are some secondary objectives where, say, you get a commander for shooting down X planes but nothing like the "Destroy all enemy ground units" of Dunkirk.

To put your mind at ease, here are lists of Burma Road and Panzerkrieg primary objectives by scenario:

BURMA ROAD

OPERATION KROHCOL
Capture and Hold Betong
Stall the Japanese Advance

FORCE Z
Defend Force Z
Protect the British destroyers

THE FALL OF SINGAPORE
Do not lose Paya Lebar
Evacuate 5 ground units to exit hexes

KAWKAREIK PASS
Defend Kawkareik
Recapture Myapadaing

BATTLE OF SITTANG BRIDGE
Evacuate 1st Indian unit
Evacuate 2nd Indian unit
Evacuate 3rd Indian unit
Recapture Sittang

RANGOON FALLS
Evacuate 5 ground units
Halt the Japanese scout force

QUIT INDIA DENIED
Disperse rioting Indian factory workers
Assist British admin buildings under siege
Arrest the leader of the Quit India movement

OPERATION CANNIBAL
Capture at least 3 Primary VPs

OPERATION LONGCLOTH
Reach Evacuation Point Zulu
Resupply at Aberdeen LZ
Resupply at Piccadilly LZ

LEDO ROAD
Capture all Primary VPs
1 construction unit must survive

IMPHAL '44
Defend Imphal
Defend Senapati and Churachandpur

IRRAWADDY RIVER
Capture 4 Primary VPs on the Irrawaddy River
Capture Meiktila

RACE FOR RANGOON
Capture Rangoon Jail
Capture Rangoon Port
Capture Rangoon Station

PANZERKRIEG

RZHEV SALIENT
Hold at least 3 Primary VP
Control all primary VPs by the end
Capture Ramyenka and Olenino

DEMYANSK
Defend the Demyansk pocket
Capture Ramushevo
Open a supply corridor to Demyansk

KHARKOV 1942
Hold Kharkov and Krasnograd
Seal off the salient
Clear the area west of Petrovskaya

SEVASTOPOL
Capture all primary VPs
Destroy 1 fortress and 5 concrete bunkers

VORONEZH
Advance to the Don
Seal off Voronezh
Defeat the Soviet counterstrike

APPROACHING STALINGRAD
Capture all primary VPs
Capture 3 secondary VPs

CAUCASUS
Capture Krasnodar, Amavir and Maykop
Seize 2 oil pumps before turn 30

STALINGRAD
Take full control of Stalingrad

OPERATION WINTERSTORM
Relieve the encircled 6th Army
Secure the bridge over the Myshkova
Hold 2 VPs in the Chir River line

OPERATION STAR
Hold Kupyansk for 3 turns
Hold Izyum for 6 turns
Hold Volchansk and Balakleya for 10 turns
Hold Kharkov or Merefa

KHARKOV 1943

Some objectives in PK include killing a certain number of units, but it's never "kill all" so ppl don't have to clear the whole map

OK thanks. I bought PK tonight. In losing Blitzkrieg I spent too much money repairing aircraft and the armoured train. I'll be more careful when facing AA in future.

The first scenario of Panzerkrieg has me confused. Hold at least 3 primary VP. Then it has 4/2.

More confusion. Keep these units around the assembly point. Does that mean in or adjacent to it? A few hexes away? Can I move them or do they have to stay still? They will gain some points after x number of turns?

For the primary objective. 2 is the number it can't hit. It's hard to indicate a lower limit like this, so the designer has my sympathy with this!

For the units, yep, leave them out and they'll heal up

For the "Destroy all units" objective i'd recommend at least 1 or 2 scout planes, they work wonders for revealing fog of war and dont cost too much.

I didn't touch them the whole scenario and still ended with a question mark next to the objective. It wasn't failed or successful. I think if you just wait until they are up to full strength, you can feel free to use them after that and not lose out on anything.
