Some friendly advice is needed

Post by ERM »

I am hoping to pick up a copy of FOG and a couple of the Army books this weekend at Partizan, having been persuaded that playing ancients may again be an option.
Currently I have a Later Achaemenid Persian army based on the DBM lists. How does this army work in FOG, pros and cons of the major troop types would be mightily appreciated.
Cheers

It works well.
Pro's
Good Bow sword cavalry, Elite drilled and superior undrilled
Excellent Immortal(!) shooty foot that are good in terrain
Can have some good Hoplite foot
It can be very mobile and contest terrain well, apart from the hoplites
Looks good with the camels, towers and scythed chariots, see below

Cons
Depends how you want to use the army but
Doesn't get a lot of LH, out of period this is bad
If you take as much of the good stuff as you would like its small
The camels, towers and scythed chariots aren't that good

I've used it twice and like it, and its done well in a couple of competitions. I've never used the hoplites with it and if you get the terrain you don't need them.

Off the top of my head, so could be wrong, last time I used it at 800pts
IC
2xTC
2x2 Elite armd drilled Cav Bow sword
2x4 Superior armd undrilled cav Bow sword
2x8 Immortals Superior armd drilled MF lt Sp bow
2x6 Average undrilled unprotected LF bow
1x8 Average undrilled MF protected Lt Sp (half) Bow
1x2 average undrilled BWg Bow
1x4 poor undrilled protected camel Bow sword
1x4 average undrilled unprotected LH bow Sword

I haven't played with or against a Later Achaemenid army yet in FoG. However, I have used and had used against me armored cav with lt spear and sword, which the LAP can have in great numbers. It can be very effective in combat--especially melee with the armor and sword. Deployed in a single rank such cav can evade, a very nice option. It can only have 8 bases of 'shooty cav' in the core listbut unlike the previous EAP army, it can have up to 30 bases of LH (some of which could be cav instead--giving you more 'shooty cav'). Up to 32 bases of hoplites and another 24 of drilled MF with lt spear. Seems like it could be a large army, especially if you decide to field some of the core cavalry as protected and downgrade them to average or even poor.

I, too, would like to hear how this army has done so far in FoG :)

I am fairly sure that EAP has won at least a couple of tournaments recently. Of course the fact it does not have masses of Knights/Armoured medium foot/Longbow/Poor Pike (delete as appropriate) means that winning a couple of tournaments must have been sheer fluke

Thanks so far guys. Phil/Hammy (same as the FOW group?) I was looking for the Later AP not the Early which I think is the one you both mentioned. Although with a few tweaks mine could become an EAP

There's a report of me playing against an EAP army , and an EAP list on my website in the Britcon 2008 report. I think its Game 4?.

The EAP is best described as "surprisingly tasty" in FoG.

Ahh, that should teach me not to trust Phil ;)

Looking at the list it seems that you could put together an army almost identical to a Lydian if you wanted and Lydian managed to finish in the top 10 at Britcon. There are some interesting bits you can add like the Guard infantry (although I have a feeling they won't be that good) and guard cavalry (who will be.

I would think that with a bit of effort this could be a perfectly handy army and very good against shooty cavalry and massed light horse.

Oh, I am the same Hammy as on the FoW group 8)

the Later Achaemenid Persian army is evil I faced it with my Suljuk Turks and got my horse handed to me. they were the only army who brought more Bows to the turnement then I did they can be a very good army but do take some finese to run.

Will you give the Later Achaemenids a go then? If so, let us know how they play out for you.

Cheers,

Dale
