Site D-16 help

Post by SullyRob »

Hey so I've been reached the site D-16 on normal and seem to have run into a snag. I seem to be having trouble killing all the ork units within the turn limit given. I came really close last time, I had reached the main objective in the cliff face at the end of the map, but there will still a few infantry units in the valley and a couple of artillery units I discovered in the cliffs surrounding the valley. I can't seem to kill the enemy units fast enough. The units surround the first two objectives in the south and that trench line at the valley entrance seemed to take too long to kill. I tried to split my force up into two units and attack the first two objectives at the same time, but the one I sent east became to weak so the other had to do the heavy lifting.(To be fair the eastern force was mostly infantry, so that was probably the reason why). But still it seems to me like there is way to many units to hunt down and kill and not enough turns to do it in. Does anyone have any advice for this mission on how to kill the enemy units faster?

Hi SullyRob. I encountered the same problems as you initially. For my first couple of attempts I started with 9 inf units ( a mix of Ultramarine and Blood angels) 1 x Warhound Titan, 4 Steel Legion tanks, 1 x Land Raider Achilles, 1 Hellfire Dread, 3 x Basilisk and 1 x Deathstrike arty. I had about 3500 purchase points which I kept for unit replenishment. It wasn't enough firepower and I got trounced soundly by the AI. I went back one scenario and restarted. Went into the D16 scenario the next time with the same units listed above reinforced with 1 x Reaver Battle Titan, 1 x Reaver Titan with Melta Cannon, another Hellfire Dread and an Orgyn veteran (had some points left over.) I had only 505 purchase pts for replenishment this time.

My tactics were as follows: Went armour / Titan heavy to the left with 3 inf; went infantry heavy to the right with 2 armour in support. After the initial 2 turns, the Basilisks went right for fire support, the Deathstrike went left. Once the two built-up areas on the flanks had been taken down, the forces on the left and right penetrated into the trenchline and started rolling them up into the centre. This is where your infantry and the Titans come into their own. The armour, particularly the Titans and the arty soften up the strong points while your infantry close assault, staying in the trenches.

Once the trench line is defeated the Titans have to be released to punch deeper into the pocket to eliminate the arty and start softening up the infantry that had eliminated the garrison in the hills. The Titans soften up infantry as they move North. My infantry mopped up behind them with all of the arty in direct support. Unfortunately due to the slow speed of the Steel Legion armour moving through the trench lines they were only able to support the final attack in the last two turns.

The good news is that once you've penetrated past the trench line and eliminated the supporting armour, the Ork infantry is of lower quality and don't stand up well to close assault by your infantry. Plus some of the infantry at the very base of the pocket are in bad shape from the fight with the garrison. I was able to complete the scenario in 21 turns and lost only the Orgyn inf.

I hope that this helps. Good luck!

Thanks a ton for the advice Swordfish. Rebuilt the battalion like yours was and I finally beat it. The other big change up was that I moved the garrison out of the cliff entrance and into nearby buildings this time. Helped them last a lot longer and was able till kill alot of the infantry and artillery surrounding them before the main force arrived.
