Gniew 1626

Post by KiwiWarlord »

Playing this scenario for the first time as an MP game.
I assumed that the Fortress beside the town of Gniew and Gniew itself, which appears as a walled town, would only be able to be entered or exited by the roads and gateways.
What a surprise when the Swedish garrison of the Fort jumped over the walls and attacked me, in the rear no less....
A Swedish Cavalry Regiment flew over the town wall into a Polish garrison unit's flank.....

N.B. The Swedes garrison the fort, the Poles the town which is adjacent the fort, at the start.

Is it possible to make roads the only way into these fortified areas ?
Notes by the scenario designers would also be helpful.

A great scenario by the way, thanks to the designer.

Movement in the game is based on the terrain type of the tile - the whole tile. The problem is that if heavy fortifications were made impassable, then the garrison would not be able to move around inside the fortress, as a fortification object makes the whole square count as "heavy fortification" terrain type .

Of course fortresses often had sally ports for the very purpose of such sallies, but not everywhere.

The trick to restricting access to and from the walls in scenario design is to put impassable terrain in the squares outside the fortress where you do not want it to be possible for troops to pass in and out. (e.g. Rivers - representing a moat - or Cliffs).

Warlord, thanks for the feedback. Not sure I will make any changes to the scenario. The Swedish garrison in Gniew is just a fun detail in this battle. It shouldn't have any major effect on the outcome of the battle, if you are aware of how terrain in P&S works... ;-)
Don't forget to read the my pdf about the battle. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/535 ... _Gniew.pdf

I'm probably just having a senior moment, but I've looked for this scenario and haven't been able to find it.

Where exactly should I be looking for it?

You may already have it loaded, it is MP only.

Otherwise it's approximately the twelfth one in the list and is actually listed as "2nd Swedish-Polish War". (Presumably because cavehobbit was originally intending to add other scenarios from that war to the campaign)

Many thanks, Richard.

Now I just have to remember how to play hotseat.

(I think it's done by accepting your own challenge in the multiplayer forum).

Yep. The first time you do that it will give you a warning in case you did it by mistake. Just ignore that and accept it again.
