Period images of polish troops and banners

In 1605 the polish kind Sigismundus Vasa maried Constance of Austria. An unknown artist has created images of troops present during the wedding festivities. The imeges are today known as the Stockholm roll.

Yep, certainly seems so. They also are clearly attached to the rear of the saddle itself, not to the back of the rider.


Other thing to note, the western-style infantry in blue and yellow are as far as I know a small "representative" or "parade"group fielded directly by the Kraków burghers (think of it as similar to the representative Dutch night watchmen in cities like Rotterdam).

These were not in any way part of the standing army, nor did most of the city militias in times of war dress so finely and gallantly. City militias played no role in almost al of Poland's 17th century wars, the notable exception being the struggle against the Swedish "deulge" invasion of 1655-1660.
