Interception Charge Question friendly in way

Post by meledward23 »

This came up in a game the other day. One participant used his camera phone and perhaps he will be so kind to post some images to this thread later today if he sees it.

The situation was as follows. My overly intelligent CAV (4 bases) charged a fine pair of elephants.

XX
OOOO

X = Elephant
O = Cav

Now, that would be the final position if I charged the elephants. However hanging out to the left of the elephants was his Cav.

C
C......XX
C.......
C.......OOOO

So from the above you should see that if he charges straight forward he will hit the elephants about 1/4" before he can intercept my Cav (labeled as "O").

So, does he intercept? Does he step down from the elephants?

Thanks.

If he wheels slightly he can reach the enemy Cav before being blocked by the elephants. Either way, that enemy Cav is f***ed

No wheel is allowed in an interception charge, except in limited circumstances that I do not I think apply here. I do not believe the interception charge by CCCC is possible as it does not cross the path of the chargers because of the positioning of the elephants.

Interecept

Paul is correct. The elephants obstruct the intercept charge, which is therefore not possible.

That is what we decided, that the Intercept did not take place.

Thanks for the responses.

Interesting. Very counter-intuitive.

Counterintuitive? It makes perfect sense to me. Their own troops (the El) are in the way. And they will clearly get to make a flank charge in their upcoming impact phase.

Partially in the way, and if they wheel a bit they can get in without even touching the nellies.

There are simple rules for intercepts. One is that they cannot be made if blocked by their own troops. Another is that they cannot (normally) wheel.

Obviously this example is an extreme case where the blockage is minimal, so it looks a bit odd. The only way to avoid such boundary issues are to complicate the rules by adding exceptions to exceptions, which we prefer to avoid.

They can make a flank charge next turn by wheeling slightly.

So the presence of the elephants delays but does not prevent their flank charge. Not very unreasonable, I would submit.
