FOG newb

Post by mgholson »

I purchased FOG a while back when I finally gave up trying to find miniature gamers what actually wanted to play. I spent lots of money on 40K stuff only to learn that while lots of people were into it, no one really played it. I was more interested in historical stuff that wasn't overly complicated and found FOG digital.

I played awhile and lost interest I guess, but I recently have started playing again and I realized I've never lost a game to the AI. I think that's one reason why I quit, I was winning every game even though I really just moved my troops up and fought and tried to prevent holes in my line.

I suppose that the AI must extremely suck considering I don't really know how to play and I still win. I'm sure that I would be destroyed against a real person online.

I'm thinking about trying out some online play, all I have is the basic game so no DAG. I'm most interested in the medieval era and Storm of Arrows looks really neat. Do I have to buy Rise of Rome to get the DAG? I'm assuming I need the DAG to make my own army list and play online?

It baffles me why the basic ability to create an army list wasn't included in the basic game?

Does one need to own most of the expansions to play games online?

Hello mgholson, and welcome to the forum.

I believe that DAG is in the basic game (have you updated to latest version?). But without any expansions you can only create mid Republican Roman and Carthaginian armies. The Storm of Arrows is highly recommended and one of my favorites.

Playing the AI is good only to learn the basics of the game, and the real fun is playing online. There's a new rewrite of the game coming out soon, so I think the AI will be improved.

The DAG was not included in the original game and was added in the first expansion, Rise of Rome. The basic game now comes with two armies from the Second Punic War so does allow you to play DAG games as well as scenarios on line. Storm of Arrows, Sword and Scimitar and Eternal EMpire all include Medieval armies depending on the areas and periods you're interested in for Medieval battles. Personally I like Storm of Arrows the least of the three but my preference is for armies with more mounted troops and for more fluid games rather than lining up longbowmen or Swiss pikemen but YMMV.

Playing scenarios on line is also quite viable and much more challenging than against the AI. There are a number of custom scenarios available which can be downloaded that other players have created. You can initiate online games with any scenarios you already have and can accept scenario challenges posted by other players whether or not you have the scenario already installed.

Thanks for the answers, I updated to the newest release and found the DAG. Seems the game is improved in several ways, lots of new scenarios to play.

This is going to sound dumb but my preference for Storm of Arrows was based more or less on the cover art and that fact that it sounds really cool to throw a Storm of Arrows against my enemies.

From what I understand of medieval. mounted combat takes a back seat and things are more defensive? Guess that could make for less dynamic battles.

Empire Eternal looks to be a great deal with 46 new armies maybe that's the ticket?

I'm not quite ready to play online yet, let me practice a bit more.

I like Storm of Arrows, and batesmotel likes Eternal Empire better. It's just a matter of preference. Maybe I'll change my mind when I learn how to control those !"#€%& horse archers better! :)

They are both Late Medieval period, but western (SoA) and eastern (EE) theater. If you like to rain arrows on your enemies, they both have the option of creating great archer armies.
