Hi,
A unit is behind a crest on a hill. This unit will be visible only from the other side of the crest at 1 MU.
The question is: if this unit is touching the crest, at what distance can this unit see, to other side?
A - 1 MU only?
B - No limitation, as the unit is actually on top of a hill?
Or putting it another way, can the unit shoot or charge at an enemy that is within charge or shoot distance on the other side of the hill, but further away than 1 MU?
I searched the rules but I couldn't find a detailed sentence regarding who sees who behind crest lines. One could think that it would be a similar situation of being on the inside edge of a gully, but that is not written anywhere and maybe the rule authors had a different view...

Re: Visibility behind a crest
Visibility is mutual in FoG. If you can see him he can see you. If you are at the crest so you can see, shoot and charge him he can see, shoot and charge you.
If you are in a wood you can only see 2MU and only be seen from 2 MU.
Gullies are an exception where those within can see and shoot out but you can only see them from the edge unless they shoot out.

Re: Visibility behind a crest
Thanks for the explanation Phil. So if this group would be placed in ambush behind a crest, it could only see 1 MU to the other side, otherwise it would be visible itself, and the ambush would not be possible at all, correct?

Re: Visibility behind a crest
Yep.
If they are behind the crest they are not looking over it. Enemey troops on a second move getting to 1 MU would have to stop at 1MU. Those on a normal move could elect to continue to their full distance if possible (may need a CMT) or stop at 1MU

Please note that this is only troops in ambush. If they are 'not visible, but otherwise on the table' the enemy still have to stop at 6MU/4MU depending on the troop type.blackbeard66 wrote:Crystal clear. Thanks.
