City names (suggestion)

Post by AP59 »

Is there a way to see city names other than hovering over a city and check the info on the right of the screen which I often forget to do in the heat of the battle? Just like we have in Commander The Great War.

I would like to see the names on the map, it makes the maps and memories come alive, it increases the immersion. I would like to think about the unexpected attack near Verdun, the amazing tactics that saved our men near Rouen, the big storm near Kirov that slowed down our progress, the moment my men got annihilated near Vyazma, the tactical failures near Nezhin and the surprising victory near Dover. To others this might seem a minor issue, to me most definitely it isn't, it has bugged me from the start. I love the feeling of writing my own history and names help with that, that's why I also like the hero system.

Maybe a suggestion for the future and making it optional for those who don't like to see the names? Could it be modded?

I know it has been discussed here already: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.as ... =&#2860892

Rudankort's answer was: " this would create a lot of visual clutter"

Then why did they add it to Commander The Great War?

A lot of visual clutter? I disagree:

Right now the maps are feeling rather lifeless without city names on the map and by making it optional we avoid displeasing other players who don't like the names.

Look how lifeless the mid-west is without city names:

I second that. It would add to the imersion, and would make the game feel more alive. "The heroic defence of Vilnya" instead of the heroic defence of this hex here with buildings on it.

Seconded. This would be a really good idea, since it makes the maps become much more alive and also helps with our grasp of geography ... really.

Not so sure about it. What happens when we have cities occupying several hexes? Having something like "London" "London" "London" "London" "London" would look rather strange IMO.

I suggest (for MODS) a additional layer for city names.
I think, some (4?) layers are now unused.
Okay, you have to make a single hex for each name, but you control the Position.

That could be avoided. The level editor could offer a function for marking cities that should be named. That way a level designer could mark single important spots inside a city that should be names while leaving the other hexes unmarked. That way special spots like kremlin could be marked in big city maps and small villages that don't really have a name could be left out too. Shouldn't be too hard. Maybe a feature that one of the next patches or expansions could introduce? :) However... let's not forget that such a feature would require the devs to go over ALL old maps again... which might be a bit much work for little gain. But maybe for future maps, leaving it open to modders to add the feature to the older maps.

And think of Moscow41 or Warsaw44, the cities are divided in districts (e.g. "Western District"). But it is a great idea, it should be implemented.

Another maybe more automatic way would be to mark all single hex cities and in multi hex cities only the victory hexes, and if none is present a random one near the center? Dunno :D

My complaint about names is they appear in place of the terrain type. Terrain type is not always obvious from the graphics, particularly in mountain ranges, where high mountains, mountains and hills can be tough to tell part. But in some scenarios every hex in the mountain range gives the name of the range on the rollover, not the terrain type.

A good idea, it really looks more lively with the names on it. I would also like that on rivers and bridges,or other objectives.

I would also love to have city and landmark names. Even the strategic map could benefit from it.

Let's not have this topic die. Let's keep bumping it until either someone makes a mod, or the developers feel enough pressure to implement it themselves.

Wouldn't it be nice to introduce a hotkey for this? As long as you press the key, the city (and river) names will be visible. Would ease up things a bit.

Better yet, a toggle, so you don't have to keep holding down the key.

Definitely support this, would add a greater feeling of immersion for sure. Also i always wanted to see a world map that would zoom in to the particular battle area of the next scenario. Think the old Panzer General had something like that if i remember correctly?
