A few questions on movement

Post by bodoli »

Hello,

I do not find limbering for horse artillery. Is this a simple movement?

Does squares have a movement rate? I do not find any.

On Wheeling: Page on page 38 "All wheeling must be completed within the first half of the movement and before any straight forward movement if the unit is making an assault move". But the picture on page 38 shows a wheel at the beginning and the end of the movement. Which one is right?

1. Have a look at the definition for "artillery" on page 104. All medium artillery are treated the same for general movement purposes (there are slightly different responses when reacting to an assault). The Quick Reference Sheet shows an Artillery Only section - it does not specify whether artillery is foot or horse rather than medium or heavy. So, "yes" the limbering of horse artillery is a simple move (unless wavering when it is a complex move).

2. Squares can move 1MU. Refer page 36, left-hand column 3rd bullet point. The updated Quick Reference Sheet available off the website has this added into the move distances section.

3. There is no contradiction. Both are correct. During an assault move, units can only wheel at the beginning. However, during the general movement phase, units can wheel any number of times within their measured movement allocation. The picture on page 38 shows a unit moving in the movement phase and how to calculate the distance moved (ie it is not an assault move into contact). Conversely, the picture on page 29 shows some assault moves into contact and illustrates the minimum and maximum wheels that are allowed (all of which must be completed before any straight ahead movement).

Heavy artillery require a CMT to limber. Horse and Medium limbering are simple moves (except when wavering as Keith says).

Limbering is a formation change for any artillery.
