Southern League - Milton Keynes Round 1st December

Post by quackstheking »

Hi Everyone

Just an early heads up for your diaries with details of the Milton Keynes Round of the 2013 FOGR Southern League. This will be the 5th and final event of this well supported competition in 2013, so we will see the emergence of the overall placing's in this league as well as the individual event winners!

I am still working out exactly how many spaces we have, but we will be able to do at least 28 , maybe more if I work out exactly how many tables we can fit in. With the great success of the 3 game, pre-set terrain, themed format, we will be following that pattern for this event.

Cost would be £10 payable on the day - Teas, coffees and biscuits provided.

Round 5 – Milton Keynes

• Date - Sunday 1st December, starting at 9.15am
• Venue - MKWS, York House Youth Centre, London Road, Stony Stratford MK11 1JQ
• Format - 3 x 2hr 40min games - pre set terrain
• Period - "The First First World War" - any army, any book whose list would be valid in 1635 - The French entry into 30YW)

Image

Initially send to me details of your interest and any further suggestions for a theme.

Cheers

Don

Count me in please Don.

I don't mind the theme, but I thought the plan was to have one open round...

See you Saturday?

Was planning to attend the Open round but Theme with pre-set terrain no interest to me so count me out. Hope everyone enjoys it.

Hi Timmy. I must admit I don't like the idea generally of preset terrain and was originally not in favour of the 3 game format.
However, after trying it out and despite being on possibly the worst terrain tables for my army choice at Oxford, the format worked and was really enjoyable especially for 1 dayers . Might even be an interesting format for a 6 game 2 day format.

cheers

I agree with Jim

I had a great game against Don Avis with 2 cavalry armies on the worst possibly which neither of us would have chosen, it was great fun

cheers

My initial stance was to run this as advertised i.e.2 games with full set up rules .

However the overwhelming feedback has been:-

1. Have a theme
2. 3 games is great

I have had 2 games against Alasdair: one where we both had cavalry armies on terrain we both wouldn't have chosen where Alasdair was edging it when time was called and one where my Hawaiian host held Alasdair to a very hard fought but awesome fun 10-10.

With preset terrain the action starts quicker!

It wasn't my choice but it is great FUN! Best recommendation I can give - try it; it's fun! :D

Don,

Can you reserve two places for Tom and me. I am waiting to hear from Jerry and Ben.

So there could be 4 plus Alasdair and Paddy from Oxford

Hi Timmy,

It's still 800pts on a 6'x4' table with games lasting 2hrs 40mins, pre-set terrain with the terrain types being set in proportion to the armies entered. On the day there is a random draw for what table you will be on.

Any other questions please feel free to ask.

One final question (I hope). Does PBI decide who gets to choose which side of the table to deploy on or some other method? (I know I poo-pooed this earlier but Sunday was such fun and everyone seemed so positive about the short form that I am SERIOUSLY thinking about going and if I can get any decent list out of a minor morph of one of my existing armies...)

Hi Timmy,

Glad you're interested. It may be "Short Form" in terms of hours played, but in doing away with the Terrain set up, we usually save at least 30 minutes and you get down to the serious fighting quicker. Interestingly, looking at the results for Rounds 1 and 2 against 3 there were still roughly the same number of "winning" games!

Pre Battle Initiative is still used as usual and the winner gets to choose to either (1) move and set up first with the opponent choosing the table side or (2) choose the table sides but the opponent sets up and moves first.

Can be crucial if you have a mounted force!

OK from the M1 (northbound) is it better to come off at J14 and go via Newport Pagnall and across on the A422 or is it better to come off at J13 and brave the 17 roundabouts on the A421?

Hi Timmy,

I drive up there from Enfield and on a clear run (which I would expect on a Sunday morning) the journey time is about 55 minutes door to door.

I get off the M1 at J14 and then turn left at the 1st roundabout and right at the second onto the dual carriageway before crossing the myriad of roundabouts past the Central MK Shopping Centre till you get to the A5. Then it's right onto the A5, off at the first exit and then follow the signs to Stoney Stratford. All in all, it's about 12 minutes from the motorway to the club and there is ample free parking at the club.

Hope that helps.
